Biography

Short Description

Peter Chŏng Wŏn-ji (Korean: 정원자 베드로; also romanized Jeong Won-ji) was a Korean Catholic layman and martyr of the nineteenth century. Catholic martyrologies record that he was born in 1819 in Seoul, in the Joseon Kingdom. He belonged to the small Catholic community that had taken root in Korea from the 1780s, a church begun largely by Korean lay scholars who encountered Christianity through books obtained in Beijing, rather than by foreign missionaries. Catholicism remained illegal under Joseon law, which treated it as a threat to Confucian ritual, ancestral rites, and royal authority. The community therefore lived under intermittent but severe persecution, including major campaigns in 1801, 1839, and 1846, before the still greater violence of the 1860s.

The Byeongin persecution of 1866–1867 was the most extensive anti-Catholic campaign of the Joseon period. It followed the arrest and execution of French missionaries of the Paris Foreign Missions Society and was intensified by the French military expedition against Korea in 1866. Thousands of Korean Catholics were imprisoned, tortured, and killed. Peter Chŏng Wŏn-ji was among those arrested in this wave. Surviving notices state that he refused to apostatize under interrogation and torture. He was executed by beheading on 31 January 1867 in Seoul, at about forty-eight years of age. Public executions of Catholics in the capital were commonly carried out at designated sites such as Saenamteo on the Han River; individual burial places for many of the victims were not preserved.

He was beatified by Pope Paul VI on 6 October 1968 as one of the martyrs of the 1866–1867 persecution, a group distinct from the seventy-nine Korean martyrs of 1839 and 1846 who had been beatified by Pope Pius XI in 1925. All 103 were canonized together by Pope John Paul II on 6 May 1984 in Seoul, during the first papal visit to Korea, and are known collectively as the 103 Korean Martyrs. Their common feast in the General Roman Calendar is 20 September.

Documentary detail about Peter Chŏng Wŏn-ji as an individual remains limited. Persecution destroyed much of the community’s written record, and later hagiographies for many lay martyrs preserve little beyond name, approximate age, lay status, and date of death. What is firmly attested is his identity as a baptized Korean Catholic who was put to death for refusing to deny the faith, and his subsequent recognition by the Catholic Church as a saint and martyr. The 103 Korean Martyrs are venerated as a group in connection with the Church in Korea, whose early history is distinctive for having been founded by laity and tested by repeated martyrdom before legal toleration in the late nineteenth century.
