Biography

Short Description

Peter Hong Pyŏng-ju (Korean: 홍병주 베드로; Chinese characters 洪秉周) was a Catholic layman and martyr of the Joseon kingdom in the early nineteenth century. He was born in 1799 in Seoul, then called Hanseong, the capital. He received the baptismal name Peter. His younger brother, Paul Hong Yŏng-ju, likewise became a Catholic and would be executed with him. Surviving notices describe the family as having sufficient means to aid the clandestine Church. In Joseon society, Catholicism was treated as a heterodox teaching that threatened Confucian hierarchy, ancestral rites, and loyalty to the throne; it had been banned, and earlier waves of persecution, notably in 1801, had already claimed many lives. The Korean Church of this period was still largely a lay community, often without resident clergy for long stretches, spreading through books, kinship, and secret instruction.

Hong served that underground community as a catechist and lay leader (a role often called hoejang in Korean Catholic usage). Short hagiographical notices, drawing on trial records and later compilations, present him as generous toward the poor and toward fellow believers who suffered confiscation of property or social ruin because of the faith. Precise anecdotes about his inner life, education, or daily occupations are scarce, as is typical for many of the Korean lay martyrs, whose biographies were reconstructed mainly from government interrogation documents and from memories preserved by the community after the persecutions.

In 1839 the Gihae persecution broke out under the regency of Queen Sunwon during the reign of King Heonjong. Catholic households across the peninsula were hunted, imprisoned, and pressed to recant. Peter Hong was arrested in the course of this campaign, imprisoned in Seoul, and tortured in an effort to make him apostatize and to reveal the names of other Christians. He refused to abandon the faith. On 31 January 1840 he was taken to the execution ground at Seosomun, the Small West Gate of Seoul, and beheaded. He was forty-one years old by Western reckoning. His brother Paul Hong Yŏng-ju was put to death on the same day. Their executions belong to the cluster of martyrdoms of 1839–1840 that later formed a large part of the group known as the Korean Martyrs. Bodies of those killed at Seosomun were sometimes recovered in secret by Catholics and buried in the hills around the capital; a specific, continuously attested burial place for Peter Hong is not established in the sources used here.

The Holy See recognized this witness in two stages. Peter Hong Pyŏng-ju was beatified on 5 July 1925 by Pope Pius XI among the seventy-nine Korean martyrs associated with the persecutions of 1839–1846. He was canonized on 6 May 1984 in Seoul by Pope John Paul II as one of the one hundred and three Korean Martyr Saints, together with Saint Andrew Kim Taegon, Saint Paul Chong Hasang, and their companions. The Catholic Church commemorates the group on 20 September. Individual patronage is not separately recorded for him in standard lists; he is honored as one of the Korean Martyrs rather than as the patron of a particular place, profession, or cause.
