Biography

Short Description

Peter Kwŏn Tŭg-in (Korean: 권득인), known in the Church as Saint Peter Kwon Tug-in, was a Korean Catholic layman and martyr of the early nineteenth century. He was born in 1805 in Seoul, then Hanseong, capital of the Joseon kingdom. Catholicism had taken root in Korea only a few decades earlier, brought not first by resident foreign missionaries but by Korean lay scholars who encountered Christian books in China and by Yi Seung-hun, baptized in Beijing in 1784. By Peter’s lifetime the faith was already illegal. The Sinyu persecution of 1801 had already claimed many believers, including the Chinese priest Zhou Wenmo. Peter grew up in that climate of secrecy. Surviving notices present him as a baptized Catholic of the Seoul community who practiced the faith as a layman, not as a member of any religious order. Korea as yet had no native clergy: the first Korean priest, Andrew Kim Taegon, would be ordained only in 1845.

Joseon law treated Catholicism as a heterodox teaching that threatened Confucian ritual, ancestral rites, and loyalty to the throne. Despite repeated bans, the Church continued to grow through household networks, catechists, and hidden gatherings. Peter belonged to that lay world. The records used later for beatification do not preserve a detailed portrait of his occupation, education, or family circumstances, which is typical for many Korean martyrs whose names survive mainly in government interrogation registers and in lists compiled by the Church. Reliable sources do not document a spouse or children, and they do not describe him as a monk or priest. What the tradition consistently affirms is that he remained a practicing Catholic in the capital region until the next major persecution.

That persecution was the Gihae persecution of 1839, launched during the reign of King Heonjong under the regency of Queen Sunwon. French missionaries of the Paris Foreign Missions Society had recently entered Korea; their presence, together with court politics and anti-Catholic memorials, triggered mass arrests in Seoul and the provinces. Peter was seized in the capital, taken before the police authorities, and subjected to the interrogations and corporal punishments customarily used to compel recantation. He refused to apostatize. According to the dates preserved in the martyrology of the 103 Korean saints, he died in Seoul on 24 May 1839, about thirty-four years of age, in the course of that wave of imprisonments, tortures, and capital sentences. Many companions of the same year were beheaded at Seosomun, outside the city walls; Church lists place Peter’s death on the same date in Seoul, whether from the effects of torture in prison or among the public executions of those weeks.

Peter Kwŏn Tŭg-in was beatified on 5 July 1925 by Pope Pius XI among the seventy-nine Korean martyrs associated chiefly with the persecutions of 1839 and 1846. He was canonized on 6 May 1984 by Pope John Paul II in Seoul, together with Saint Andrew Kim Taegon, Saint Paul Chong Hasang, and their companions, forming the group of 103 Martyr Saints of Korea. Their common liturgical feast is 20 September. Individually he is not widely assigned particular patronages beyond his place among those martyr saints. Historical sources on his private life remain sparse; the Church remembers him primarily as a lay witness who would not abandon the Christian faith under the Joseon persecutions of the nineteenth century.
