Biography

Short Description

Peter Lê Tùy (Vietnamese: Phêrô Lê Tùy) was a Catholic priest and martyr of nineteenth-century Vietnam. He was born in 1773 in the village of Bằng Sở, in the prefecture of Thường Tín in Hà Đông province, in the Red River Delta of northern Vietnam, then under the Nguyễn dynasty. Catholicism had taken root in Tonkin through Jesuit, Dominican, and Paris Foreign Missions Society work in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and he came from a community in which the faith was already established despite earlier persecutions. He entered clerical formation and was ordained a priest of the secular (diocesan) clergy rather than as a member of a religious order. Native Vietnamese priests of his generation were relatively few and were essential to the survival of local congregations when foreign missionaries were expelled or killed.

During the reign of Emperor Minh Mạng (1820–1841), the imperial court intensified measures against Christianity, which officials portrayed as a heterodox teaching that undermined Confucian hierarchy and loyalty to the throne. Edicts required Christians to recant, often by publicly trampling a crucifix, and mandated the arrest of clergy. In that climate Lê Tùy continued to exercise his ministry among the faithful in the north and in areas toward the center of the country. Contemporary notices of the Vietnamese martyrs describe priests of his type as traveling discreetly, celebrating the sacraments in private homes, and encouraging Catholics not to apostatize. Precise details of each pastoral assignment in his career are sparsely recorded in surviving missionary reports and later Vietnamese hagiography, which tend to concentrate on the circumstances of arrest and death rather than a full curriculum vitae.

In 1833 he was seized by the authorities and refused to renounce the faith. After the judicial process of the mandarinate he was sentenced to death and was beheaded on 11 October 1833 at Đồng Hới, the citadel town of Quảng Bình province in central Vietnam. Execution by beheading (xử trảm) was a standard capital penalty for those convicted of following the so-called perverse religion of the West. His death belongs to the large cluster of martyrdoms in the 1830s under Minh Mạng, a period that also claimed French missionaries and numerous Vietnamese catechists and laypeople.

Devotion to the Vietnamese martyrs grew in the local church and among missionary congregations. Peter Lê Tùy was beatified on 27 May 1900 by Pope Leo XIII in a group of sixty-four martyrs of Tonkin, Annam, and Cochinchina. He was canonized on 19 June 1988 by Pope John Paul II in Saint Peter’s Square, together with 116 companions, under the collective title of Saint Andrew Dũng-Lạc and Companions (the 117 Martyrs of Vietnam). Their common feast in the General Roman Calendar is 24 November; Vietnamese Catholic directories also recall 11 October as the anniversary of his martyrdom. He is venerated as a priest-martyr. No distinct personal patronages separate from those of the Vietnamese martyrs as a group are firmly established in the major liturgical and hagiographical sources.
