Biography

Short Description

Peter Lieou, also known in Chinese as Peter Liu Wenyuan (Liu Wen-yuan), was a Catholic lay catechist and martyr of the Qing period. He was born in 1760 in Guizhou province in southwestern China, a region evangelized in the eighteenth century by priests of the Paris Foreign Missions Society. After his conversion he served as a catechist, teaching Christian doctrine and helping to sustain local Catholic communities when European clergy were scarce, expelled, or under arrest. Native catechists of this kind were central to the survival of the Church in the interior provinces.

For much of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries the Qing state treated Christianity as a prohibited heterodox teaching. Enforcement was uneven, but recurrent campaigns brought imprisonment, exile, and capital sentences against both foreign missionaries and Chinese believers. Guizhou was repeatedly affected. Peter Lieou’s public role as a teacher of the faith placed him within the class of offenders targeted by those edicts. Mission records preserved by the Paris Foreign Missions Society form the principal contemporary evidence for his life and death.

He was arrested on account of his Catholicism and his work as a catechist and would not apostatize. After imprisonment he was condemned to death and executed by strangulation on 17 May 1834 in Guiyang, the provincial capital, at about seventy-four years of age. Strangulation was a standard Qing method of capital punishment. Surviving notices give few particulars of his family, education, or the length of his confinement; he is known chiefly as a catechist who died rather than renounce the faith.

Pope Leo XIII beatified him on 27 May 1900 with other martyrs of the China missions. Pope John Paul II canonized him on 1 October 2000 among the one hundred and twenty Martyr Saints of China (Augustine Zhao Rong and companions). Their collective memorial in the General Roman Calendar is 9 July. Beyond the missionary reports and the documentation assembled for the causes of beatification and canonization, little independent biographical material has been published.
