Biography

Short Description

Peter Nguyễn Khắc Tự, known in Vietnamese as Phêrô Nguyễn Khắc Tự, was a nineteenth-century Vietnamese Catholic catechist who is venerated as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church among the 117 Martyrs of Vietnam. He was born in 1811 in the Red River Delta, in the area of Nam Định in what was then the northern part of the Nguyễn realm (Đại Nam). Catholicism had been present in Vietnam since the seventeenth century through the work of Jesuit, Dominican, and Paris Foreign Missions Society clergy, and by the early nineteenth century it had a substantial native following of priests, catechists, and lay faithful. That community, however, lived under recurrent official suspicion. Confucian court ideology treated Christianity as a heterodox foreign teaching that threatened ancestral rites, social hierarchy, and royal authority, and emperors issued edicts that at times prescribed imprisonment, torture, and death for those who would not recant.

As a young man Nguyễn Khắc Tự received religious formation and served as a catechist (thầy giảng), instructing converts and assisting the clergy at a time when European missionaries were being expelled or killed and the local church depended heavily on Vietnamese teachers and seminarians. Traditional accounts place his early life and work in the Bùi Chu region associated with Nam Định. He was not a member of a religious order; like many of the Vietnamese martyrs he belonged to the network of diocesan clergy and lay catechists who kept parish life going under persecution. The reign of Emperor Minh Mạng (1820–1841) brought especially severe measures. Edicts from the 1830s ordered the destruction of churches, the hunting of missionaries, and the forced apostasy of Vietnamese Christians, who were commonly required to trample a crucifix as a public sign of recantation.

Nguyễn Khắc Tự was arrested in the later 1830s during this campaign. Surviving notices of his passion, typical of the Vietnamese martyr acts preserved by missionaries and the local church, emphasize imprisonment, interrogation, and physical torment intended to break his resolve. He refused to apostatize. In 1840 he was put to death, according to the traditional record by strangulation, at an execution ground in the Sơn Tây area west of the capital. He was about twenty-nine years old. His death belongs to a larger sequence of executions of bishops, priests, catechists, and laypeople that continued under Minh Mạng and his successors Thiệu Trị and Tự Đức, and that later formed the historical core of the causes of the Vietnamese martyrs.

Memory of these deaths was kept in Vietnamese Catholic communities and in the archives of the missionary societies. In the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries the Holy See examined numerous individual and grouped causes from Vietnam. Martyrs from this period were beatified in several clusters between 1900 and 1951. On 19 June 1988 Pope John Paul II canonized 117 of them together in Rome under the title of Saint Andrew Dũng-Lạc and Companions, a group that includes bishops, priests, religious, catechists, and lay men and women, among them Peter Nguyễn Khắc Tự. Their common liturgical feast is 24 November. The canonized martyrs are honored as patrons of Vietnam and of the Vietnamese Catholic diaspora. Individual early-life detail for many of the catechists remains thin in the surviving European and Vietnamese sources, which generally record arrest, trial, and manner of death more fully than childhood or family background; the Church’s judgment rests on the evidence that he died for the faith after a life of catechetical service.
