Biography

Short Description

Peter of Krutitsy was born Pyotr Fyodorovich Polyansky on 28 June 1862 in the village of Storozhevoye in the Voronezh Governorate of the Russian Empire. The son of a parish priest, he was educated at the Voronezh Theological Seminary and at the Moscow Theological Academy, graduating from the academy in 1892. He did not take holy orders at that time. Instead he entered the Church educational service, teaching and inspecting theological schools and later serving in the central administration of the Holy Synod in Saint Petersburg. For decades he remained a celibate lay specialist in church schooling and canonical administration, and he took part in the Local Council of the Russian Orthodox Church of 1917–1918 as the Church faced revolution and the collapse of the old synodal system.

In 1920, amid the early Soviet persecution of the Church, he was tonsured a monk with the name Peter, ordained, and consecrated Bishop of Podolsk, a vicar bishop of the Moscow diocese. He became one of Patriarch Tikhon’s principal assistants. Raised to the rank of archbishop and then named Metropolitan of Krutitsy in 1924, he held the traditional office of patriarchal vicar for Moscow. When Patriarch Tikhon died in April 1925, a testament named three candidates to serve as locum tenens of the patriarchal throne: Metropolitan Kirill of Kazan, Metropolitan Agathangel of Yaroslavl, and Metropolitan Peter of Krutitsy. The first two were in exile or otherwise unable to take up the duty, so Peter assumed the role of patriarchal locum tenens and thus the acting leadership of the Russian Orthodox Church. He was never installed as Patriarch.

He would not accept Soviet demands that would have placed church government under state control. In December 1925 he was arrested, and he spent the remaining twelve years of his life in prisons, isolators, and distant exile, including periods in Siberia and in Central Asia. Many clergy and laity continued to regard him as the legitimate head of the Church. He did not approve the later policy of Metropolitan Sergius (Stragorodsky), who as deputy locum tenens issued a declaration of loyalty to the Soviet state in 1927. Even from confinement Peter remained a symbol of episcopal resistance to the subordination of the Church.

During the Great Terror he was held in the Magnitogorsk area of Chelyabinsk Oblast. An NKVD troika condemned him to death, and he was shot on 10 October 1937. His burial place is unknown, as was usual for those executed in that campaign and interred in unmarked mass graves. The Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia numbered him among the New Martyrs in 1981, and the Moscow Patriarchate glorified him in 1997. He is venerated as a hieromartyr. His principal feast is 27 September on the Julian calendar, corresponding to 10 October on the civil calendar, and he is also commemorated with the Synaxis of the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia. His reputation rests on a late vocation to monasticism and the episcopate, a brief period as acting primate, and a long martyrdom in the prisons of the Soviet Union.
