Biography

Short Description

Peter Paschal (Spanish: Pedro Pascual; Latin: Petrus Paschasius) was a thirteenth-century Spanish bishop, theologian, and martyr venerated in the Catholic Church. Traditional accounts place his birth in 1227 at Valencia, then in the Crown of Aragon, in a family of Mozarabic Christians—Iberian Christians who had long lived under Muslim rule and retained distinctive liturgical customs. He is said to have received a careful education, to have studied in Paris, and to have been ordained priest. Later hagiography, especially that of the Mercedarians, presents him as a member of the Order of Our Lady of Mercy (the Order of Mercy), founded in the thirteenth century for the redemption of Christian captives. Modern historians have sometimes questioned whether the bishop of Jaén, the polemicist whose name is attached to anti-Islamic treatises, and a Mercedarian of the same name were in every case the same person, and whether Pedro Pascual ever formally belonged to that order.

In 1296 Pope Boniface VIII named him bishop of Jaén, a Castilian see on the frontier with the Nasrid Emirate of Granada. The diocese had been restored after the Christian reconquest of the city, and the new bishop’s work lay in a region still marked by warfare and by mixed Muslim, Jewish, and recently converted Christian populations. While traveling in or near his diocese—the exact circumstances vary in the sources—he was seized by Granadan forces and imprisoned in the Nasrid capital. During a captivity of some years he is said to have preached to fellow Christian prisoners and to have written or revised polemical and catechetical works directed against Islam, among them a treatise known as Sobre la seta mahometana. The attribution of several writings that circulate under his name remains a matter of scholarly discussion.

On 6 December 1300, according to the traditional date, he was beheaded at Granada after refusing to apostatize. Christians in Iberia immediately honored him as a martyr. The Mercedarian Order in particular promoted his cult; his name entered martyrologies and liturgical calendars, and his feast is kept on 6 December. Precise details of his burial and of the later history of any relics are not securely established in the sources. Although he is widely honored as a saint, older literature does not always distinguish clearly between confirmation of an existing cult and a distinct papal beatification or canonization.

He is remembered as a pastor of a Reconquista frontier diocese, a controversialist against Islam, and a martyr of the late thirteenth century. Claims that he was a Mercedarian, and the corpus of works ascribed to him, should be treated with the caution that medieval and early-modern hagiography often blended distinct figures and amplified the deeds of frontier bishops. What can be said with reasonable confidence is that a bishop of Jaén named Pedro Pascual died a violent death at Granada around 1300 and that a cult of martyrdom attached to his memory thereafter.
