Biography

Short Description

Peter Zhang Banniu is known only by a name that combines the Christian baptismal name Peter with the Chinese surname Zhang and the given name Banniu. This form of nomenclature is characteristic of Chinese Catholics from the missionary era onward, yet the individual who bore it has left almost no trace in the published historical record. Standard reference works on the Catholic Church in China, including studies of the late Qing persecutions, the Boxer Uprising, and the twentieth-century Church, do not supply a biography that can be tied with certainty to this name.

No year of birth can be established, and no year of death is recorded in accessible martyrologies or necrologies. He is not among the 120 Martyrs of China canonized by Pope John Paul II on 1 October 2000, a group whose members—priests, religious, and laypeople from many provinces—have been identified and studied in detail. He does not appear in directories of the Chinese episcopate, in the published personnel lists of the Society of Jesus, the Order of Friars Minor, the Congregation of the Mission, or other institutes that served in China, or in the principal biographical dictionaries of Chinese Christianity.

Consequently it is impossible to say whether Peter Zhang Banniu was a cleric or a layman, whether he belonged to a religious order, whether he married, or whether he had children. No city or region of birth or death can be named, and no burial place is known. Local oral traditions, if they exist, have not been published in sources that meet ordinary historical standards and therefore cannot be repeated as fact.

In the absence of verified evidence, no feast day can be assigned, no patronage can be listed, and no pope or congregation can be named as having beatified or canonized him. The case illustrates the larger difficulty of recovering the lives of ordinary Chinese Christians whose memory was not preserved by a formal cause of canonization or by the archives of a religious order. Further progress would depend on the examination of unpublished parish registers, diocesan acta, or Roman files that have not yet been brought to light in the scholarly literature.
