Biography

Short Description

Petro Verhun was a priest of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and one of the clerical victims of Soviet persecution of Eastern Catholics in the mid-twentieth century. He was born on 18 November 1890 in Horodok, in the historical region of Galicia, then a crown land of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and today in western Ukraine. Galicia was a principal center of Ukrainian Greek Catholic life, a church of the Byzantine rite in full communion with Rome. Verhun received a higher education, including philosophical studies at the University of Lviv, and for a time worked as a teacher before completing priestly formation. In 1927 he was ordained to the priesthood by Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky of Lviv, the long-serving head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.

Soon after ordination Verhun was assigned to pastoral work among Ukrainian Catholics in Germany. He settled in Berlin, where he served as pastor of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic community and organized care for immigrants, students, and workers scattered across the country. Over more than a decade he built up parish life and charitable support for a diaspora living under the late Weimar Republic and then under National Socialist rule. In 1940 the Holy See named him Apostolic Visitator for Ukrainian Catholics in Germany, giving him responsibility for that flock, and he was also made a protonotary apostolic. He remained at his post through the Second World War, when bombing, conscription, and the movement of refugees placed heavy demands on clergy and faithful alike.

When Soviet forces occupied Berlin in 1945, Verhun did not abandon his parishioners. He was arrested by the Soviet security organs in June of that year and deported eastward. Like other Ukrainian Greek Catholic clergy, he was caught up in the campaign that accompanied the forced liquidation of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church after the so-called Synod of Lviv of 1946, which purported to dissolve the union with Rome and merge the church into the Russian Orthodox Church. Verhun was sentenced to a term in the labor camps. After serving his sentence he was not released to free residence but was consigned to perpetual exile in Siberia, a common fate for clergy whom the Soviet state regarded as politically unreliable.

He spent his last years in internal exile in Siberia, where he continued as far as circumstances permitted to exercise a quiet priestly ministry among fellow exiles. He died there on 7 February 1957. On 27 June 2001, during an apostolic visit to Ukraine, Pope John Paul II beatified Petro Verhun together with a group of Ukrainian Greek Catholic bishops, priests, religious, and laypeople who had died under Communist persecution. They are honored collectively as blessed martyrs of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, with a liturgical commemoration on 27 June. Verhun has not been canonized; his cult remains that of a blessed of the Catholic Church.
