Biography

Short Description

Petrus Bertholet is an obscure historical figure whose life is not documented in the principal hagiographical, biographical, or ecclesiastical reference works available for standard historical verification. The Wikidata identifier Q3296637 has been associated with this name, yet published sources of the kind normally used by historians and hagiographers—martyrologies, the Bibliotheca Sanctorum, the Catholic Encyclopedia, diocesan histories, and major national biographies—do not yield a confirmed year of birth, place of origin, or year of death. In keeping with a strict preference for verified fact over conjecture, those particulars are therefore left unspecified rather than inferred from office-holding dates or similar substitutes.

The given name Petrus is the Latin form of Peter and indicates a male subject. The surname Bertholet is attested in French-speaking parts of Europe, but no primary document has been verified that would locate his birth or death in a particular city or country. There is likewise no corroborated information concerning membership in a religious order, a spouse, children, or a place of burial. He did not occupy the see of Rome and was not a patriarch or catholicos of any of the ancient Eastern churches whose occupants are comprehensively listed in historical catalogues.

No feast day, patronage, or act of beatification or canonization by a pope or other competent authority can be confirmed from reliable sources. If a local cult ever existed, it has not left a trace in the calendars and liturgical books that record the veneration of saints and blesseds. The absence of such traces suggests that Petrus Bertholet, whatever his actual career, did not become the object of a formally recognized public cult in the Latin or Eastern churches.

Further research in unpublished archival material—parish registers, religious-order necrologies, or notarial records from French, Belgian, or Swiss repositories—might one day supply the missing particulars. Until such evidence is brought to light and critically examined, a responsible biographical notice can only record the name, the male gender, and the negative facts that he was neither pope nor patriarch, while remaining silent on all other points.
