Biography

Short Description

Saint Phileas, also known as Philaeas, was bishop of Thmuis in the Nile Delta of Egypt and a martyr of the early fourth century. He belonged to a distinguished and wealthy family and was widely known for his learning in Greek philosophy, literature, and the Christian scriptures. Before his elevation to the episcopate he held a position of civic prominence in Thmuis. After embracing the Christian faith he became bishop of that city and shepherded its community during the years when the Church in Egypt was both numerous and increasingly exposed to imperial coercion.

When the Great Persecution reached Egypt with particular severity, Phileas was arrested and taken to Alexandria, where the prefect of Egypt conducted the trials of leading Christians. From prison he wrote a letter to his flock at Thmuis, substantial excerpts of which were preserved by Eusebius of Caesarea in the eighth book of the Ecclesiastical History. In that letter Phileas described the sufferings of the Alexandrian martyrs, their constancy under torture, and the range of punishments—racks, scourges, and condemnation to the beasts—employed to compel Christians to sacrifice to the gods. The letter is one of the most important contemporary witnesses to the persecution in Egypt.

The Acts of Phileas, transmitted in Greek (including a papyrus from the Bodmer collection) and in Latin, record his interrogation by the prefect Culcianus. The prefect repeatedly urged him to offer sacrifice, appealing to his education, his social rank, and his duties toward his wife and children. Phileas refused, affirming the worship of the one God and rejecting idolatry. After several hearings he was condemned to death. He was beheaded at Alexandria together with the Christian tribune Philoromus, who had spoken in his defence. Traditional martyrologies place the execution in 307.

Phileas was venerated as a martyr from the fourth century. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 4 February together with Philoromus. He is remembered as a learned bishop-martyr of the Egyptian church who combined high culture with a steadfast confession of the faith during one of the last and fiercest phases of the imperial persecutions.
