Biography

Short Description

Phileas was bishop of Thmuis, a city in the Nile Delta of Roman Egypt and capital of the Mendesian nome, in the early fourth century. Ancient Christian writers present him as a man of wealth, civic standing, and extensive Greek education, trained in philosophy and letters, who applied that learning to the service of the Church. His episcopate coincided with the Great Persecution begun under Diocletian, when imperial edicts required sacrifice to the gods and fell with particular severity on the clergy of Egypt. Thmuis was already an established Christian see; Phileas belongs to the generation of Egyptian bishops who were imprisoned and tried in Alexandria rather than in their own cities.

While in custody he wrote a letter to the church of Thmuis describing the sufferings of Christians in the capital. Eusebius of Caesarea preserved a long extract of it in the eighth book of his Ecclesiastical History. The letter recounts the variety of tortures used against confessors—scourging, the rack, iron claws, and prolonged suspension—and praises those who died without yielding. It is one of the few surviving pastoral documents composed in prison during that persecution and shows Phileas as a bishop intent on strengthening his own flock by the example of the Alexandrian martyrs.

The Acts of Phileas, which survive in Greek (including a fourth-century Bodmer papyrus close in date to the events), Latin, and Coptic, record his interrogation before Clodius Culcianus, prefect of Egypt. The Greek text has the character of a judicial protocol. Culcianus pressed him to sacrifice, invoked duty to the emperors, and appealed to his learning and to his wife and children. Phileas refused, confessing the one God and Christ. After several hearings he was condemned to be beheaded. A tribune named Philoromus, who protested when relatives of the bishop tried to turn him from his confession, was sentenced with him. Later martyrologies place their execution at Alexandria on 4 February; the year is conventionally given as 306 or 307, within Culcianus’s prefecture.

Veneration of Phileas as a martyr-bishop is ancient. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him together with Philoromus on 4 February, and he appears in Eastern calendars as well. Beyond the letter quoted by Eusebius and the acts of his trial, reliable sources do not preserve the date or place of his birth, the course of his earlier career, or the site of his burial. He remains a principal witness to the last great Roman persecution in Egypt and to the educated episcopate of the Nile Delta on the eve of the peace of the Church.
