Biography

Short Description

Philibert of Jumièges, also known as Saint Philibert, was a Frankish abbot and monastic founder of the seventh century, whose career belongs to the great wave of Columbanian and Benedictine foundations in Merovingian Gaul. He was born in Gascony, in the region of Eauze, to a family of high rank. His father, Filibald, later became bishop of Aire. As a boy Philibert was placed at the court of King Dagobert I, a common path for aristocratic youths destined for public or ecclesiastical life. There he received a courtly education and came into contact with other young nobles who would become leading churchmen, among them Audoin (Saint Ouen), the future bishop of Rouen.

Leaving the court, Philibert entered the monastery of Rebais in Brie, in the diocese of Meaux. Rebais had been founded in the Columbanian tradition; its abbot Agilus (Saint Aile) had ties to Luxeuil. Philibert was in time made abbot of Rebais, but his government of the community proved contentious, and he departed. After a sojourn that included Luxeuil, he obtained from King Clovis II and Queen Balthild a grant of land in a wooded stretch of the lower Seine valley. There, in the mid-seventh century (the traditional date is 654), he established Jumièges. The abbey followed a mixed monastic rule combining elements of the Rule of Saint Benedict with Columbanian custom. Under Philibert’s direction Jumièges grew quickly into one of the foremost monasteries of Neustria, noted for the size of its community and the regularity of its life.

Philibert’s independence and his criticism of the mayor of the palace, Ebroin, brought him into political danger. He was imprisoned and then driven into exile. In these years he founded further monasteries, including a house on the island of Herio (Noirmoutier) off the coast of Poitou and a community at Pavilly closely associated with the abbess Saint Austreberthe. He was later restored to Jumièges, but he spent his final years at Noirmoutier. He died there on 20 August 684. His disciples continued the observances he had planted in the Seine valley and on the Atlantic coast.

The cult of Philibert developed soon after his death. In the ninth century, Viking attacks on the Loire and the islands forced the monks of Noirmoutier to abandon their house, carrying his relics with them. After a stay at Déas (the later Saint-Philibert-de-Grand-Lieu) the community and the relics found a lasting home at Tournus in Burgundy, where the abbey of Saint-Philibert became the centre of his veneration. His feast is observed on 20 August. He is remembered as a principal monastic founder of seventh-century Neustria and as a figure who helped transplant a blended Benedictine-Columbanian observance from the eastern Frankish monasteries to Normandy and the western coast.
