Biography

Short Description

Philibert Vrau was born in Lille, in the industrial north of France, on 8 November 1829, into a Catholic manufacturing family engaged in the production of sewing thread. He received a Christian education in that milieu and, after his studies, entered the family firm. Together with Camille Féron-Vrau, who married Vrau’s sister Marie and became his partner in business and in apostolic work, he developed the enterprise into a commercially successful house, known especially for sewing thread sold under the name Fil au Chinois. The profits of the firm later underwrote a wide range of Catholic institutions and charities, while Vrau himself lived with marked personal austerity.

He remained a layman for his entire life. He never married and had no children, embracing celibacy and directing his time and resources toward prayer and the service of the Church. Daily Mass and devotion to the Eucharist, including the promotion of nocturnal adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in Lille, were central to his spiritual practice. In a city that was a major textile center with a large industrial working population, he supported the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul and other works of charity and workers’ association, seeking to join industrial responsibility with the social Catholicism then taking shape in nineteenth-century France.

Vrau was among the principal lay founders of the Catholic University of Lille, the Facultés catholiques de Lille, established in the 1870s so that higher education might be offered under Church auspices after the French state had tightened its control of the public universities. He contributed money, organization, and public advocacy to that foundation, which became a lasting Catholic intellectual center. He was likewise among those who organized the first International Eucharistic Congress, held at Lille in 1881, an event that launched a subsequent series of international Eucharistic congresses.

In later decades he continued to animate pious and social works in Lille, often in close collaboration with Féron-Vrau. Among Catholics of the North he acquired a popular reputation for holiness, sometimes expressed in the nickname of the saint of Lille. He died in Lille on 16 May 1905. He belonged to no religious order, held no episcopal or papal office, and has not been beatified or canonized. His historical importance is that of a nineteenth-century lay industrialist who placed Eucharistic piety, Catholic higher education, and charity at the center of a public life lived under the French Third Republic.
