Biography

Short Description

Saint Philibert, also known as Philibert of Jumièges or Philibert of Noirmoutier, was a Frankish monastic founder of the seventh century. He was born in Gascony, in the southwest of the Frankish realms, to an aristocratic family. His father, Filibald, served at the court of King Dagobert I, and Philibert himself was educated among the young nobles of the Merovingian court. There he came under the influence of leading churchmen, above all Saint Audoin of Rouen, and chose the monastic life rather than a secular career.

He entered the abbey of Rebais in Brie, a monastery of Columbanian observance, and later served as its abbot. After leaving Rebais, he obtained from King Clovis II and Queen Balthild a grant of land in the lower Seine valley, where in the mid-seventh century he founded Jumièges. The community followed a mixed monastic rule that drew on both Benedictine and Irish-Columbanian customs and became one of the principal abbeys of Neustria. Philibert’s independence and the size of his foundation involved him in the factional politics of the later Merovingian court. He came into conflict with Ebroin, mayor of the palace, was imprisoned, and was forced into exile from Jumièges.

He then established a new monastery on the island of Herio, today Noirmoutier, off the coast of Poitou, and spent his remaining years there as abbot. He died at Noirmoutier on 20 August, according to the traditional date in 684. His tomb became a place of cult. In the ninth century, Viking attacks on the Atlantic coast and the Loire led the monks to carry his relics inland: first to Déas, later known as Saint-Philbert-de-Grand-Lieu, and in 875 to Tournus in Burgundy. The abbey church of Saint-Philibert at Tournus remained the chief shrine of his relics and the centre of his medieval cult.

Philibert is commemorated liturgically on 20 August. He belongs to the large number of early medieval abbots whose sainthood was established by local cult, relic translation, and entry in martyrologies rather than by a later papal process of canonization. Historical knowledge of his career rests mainly on the early Vita Filiberti and on ninth-century narratives of the translations, sources that mix reliable institutional memory with conventional hagiographical themes. He is especially associated with Jumièges, Noirmoutier, Saint-Philbert-de-Grand-Lieu, and Tournus.
