Biography

Short Description

Philip Argyrion, better known in Latin as Philippus Argyriensis or Philippus Agriensis and in Italian as San Filippo d’Agira, is the early Christian priest and missionary associated with the inland Sicilian town of Agira, whose ancient Greek name was Agyrion or Argyrium. He is remembered in Sicilian hagiography as one of the principal evangelizers of the island’s interior and as a wonder-working exorcist. Almost everything that can be said about him rests on later legend and on the strength of a local cult rather than on contemporary documents; no securely dated inscription, letter, or chronicle from his own lifetime survives. The form of the name “Argyrion” is simply the toponymic derived from Argyrium, not evidence of a separate historical figure.

The traditional vita, which circulated in medieval Sicily and was later taken up by the Bollandists and local ecclesiastical writers, presents him as a man of Eastern origin—variously Thrace, Cappadocia, or Syria—who came to Rome, was ordained priest by a Pope Felix, and was sent to Sicily to preach. There he is said to have worked especially around Argyrium, to have driven out demons, and to have died at Agira, where his tomb became a place of pilgrimage. The mention of a Pope Felix has produced incompatible chronological guesses in later writers, some of whom pushed the story back into the first or third century and others of whom preferred a fifth-century setting. The first-century date sometimes attached to him (including a death year of 103) is legendary and cannot be reconciled with any Pope Felix; a late-antique, often fifth-century, context is the reconstruction most often offered by modern historians, but it remains a hypothesis rather than a documented fact. His year of birth is unknown.

What is historically firm is the antiquity and intensity of his cult in central and eastern Sicily. Agira regards him as its principal patron; his feast is kept on 12 May; and relics associated with him have long been venerated in the church of San Filippo in Agira. Other Sicilian communities, including Aci Catena, Limina, San Filippo del Mela, and Villarosa, also claim him as patron. In popular devotion he is invoked especially against demonic possession and related afflictions, which matches the exorcistic emphasis of the legendary vita. He was never Bishop of Rome or a patriarch of an Eastern see, and there is no reliable evidence that he belonged to a later religious order, was married, or had children. Canonization, in the modern papal sense, does not apply; he belongs to the large class of saints whose cult is immemorial and pre-congregational. Beyond the outline given above, the biographical record is too thin to support further precise claims.
