Biography

Short Description

Philip Zhang Zhihe (Chinese: Zhang Zhihe) was a Roman Catholic seminarian from Shanxi in northern China and one of the Christians put to death at Taiyuan on 9 July 1900 during the Boxer uprising. He is numbered among the 120 Martyr Saints of China. Almost nothing independent of the mission record survives about his family, childhood, or exact place of birth. What is known comes from Franciscan reports of the Apostolic Vicariate of Northern Shanxi and from the later beatification and canonization acts. Those sources present him as a young Chinese candidate for the priesthood, still in formation and not yet ordained, when the persecution of 1900 overtook the Taiyuan mission. He is consistently described as a seminarian; there is no evidence of marriage or of children, and his life was that of a celibate student for the Catholic priesthood.

In the later nineteenth century the Catholic presence in Shanxi was largely the work of Italian Friars Minor. Bishops Gregory Grassi and Francis Fogolla directed the vicariate from Taiyuan, where a seminary trained Chinese men in theology, Latin, and pastoral practice alongside the missionary clergy. Zhang Zhihe belonged to that student body, a group of youths formed in both Chinese and ecclesiastical learning and living in close community with the Franciscans and with the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary who served in the same mission. The seminary stood at the centre of a growing but still vulnerable local church, dependent on foreign missionaries and on Chinese catechists, seminarians, and lay helpers.

The Boxer (Yihetuan) movement of 1899–1901 combined anti-foreign feeling with hostility to Christianity, which it treated as a foreign religion. In Shanxi the governor Yuxian adopted a harsh line against missionaries and Chinese Catholics. In early July 1900 the bishops, several Franciscan priests and brothers, seven sisters of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, the Chinese seminarians, and some lay Catholics were detained. On 9 July 1900 they were taken to the governor’s yamen in Taiyuan and killed. Philip Zhang Zhihe died in that massacre together with fellow seminarians, among them John Zhang Huan, John Wang Rui, and Patrick Dong Bodi, as well as the European missionaries. He was still a young man, in his late teens or about twenty years of age. After the violence, bodies were left unburied for a time; no separate, securely identified tomb for Zhang Zhihe is recorded in standard accounts.

Testimony about the Taiyuan killings was gathered once the uprising had been suppressed. Pope Pius XII beatified Gregory Grassi, Francis Fogolla, and their companions, including the Chinese seminarians of the Shanxi mission, on 24 November 1946. On 1 October 2000 Pope John Paul II canonized the larger group of 120 martyrs who had died in China between the seventeenth and twentieth centuries. Their collective memorial in the Roman calendar falls on 9 July, the date of the Taiyuan massacre. No distinct personal patronages are attached to Zhang Zhihe in ordinary liturgical or hagiographical lists. His historical profile remains that of an obscure but well-attested Chinese seminarian of the Shanxi Franciscan mission, known almost entirely through his formation, his refusal to abandon the bishops and his companions, and his death in the Boxer persecution.
