Biography

Short Description

Philípphê Phan Văn Minh, known in English as Saint Philip Phan Van Minh, was a Vietnamese Roman Catholic diocesan priest and martyr of the nineteenth century. He was born in 1815 in the village of Cái Mơn in the Mekong Delta of southern Vietnam, then under the Nguyễn dynasty. Raised in a Catholic family during an era of intermittent imperial persecution of Christians, he was sent for priestly studies to the College General in Penang, the principal seminary serving the missions of Indochina. After formation there he was ordained a priest about 1840 and returned to Cochinchina to serve in the apostolic vicariate that covered the western Mekong region.

As a secular priest he ministered in parishes around Vĩnh Long and Mỹ Tho, celebrating the sacraments, instructing converts, and sustaining Catholic communities that often had to live discreetly under royal edicts against the Christian religion. The accession of Emperor Tự Đức in the late 1840s brought renewed and harsher measures: churches were ordered destroyed, the faithful were pressed to recant, and clergy were hunted with particular severity. Native priests who remained with their people rather than fleeing were especially exposed.

In 1853 Father Phan Văn Minh was arrested. He refused to apostatize or to trample a crucifix, the ritual test commonly imposed on suspected Christians. After imprisonment and interrogation he was condemned to death and beheaded on 3 July 1853 at Đình Khao in Vĩnh Long Province. Local Catholic memory preserved him as a priest who met execution without recanting. Secure details of his burial are not recorded in the sources ordinarily cited.

He was beatified by Pope Pius X on 2 May 1909 with other Vietnamese martyrs of the same period, and was canonized on 19 June 1988 by Pope John Paul II among the one hundred and seventeen Martyrs of Vietnam (Saint Andrew Dũng-Lạc and Companions). Their common liturgical feast is 24 November. He is venerated as a native diocesan priest who stayed with his flock in time of persecution and who died rather than abandon the Catholic faith.
