Biography

Short Description

Philogonius (also Philogonos or Philogonus; Greek Philogonios) was bishop of the church of Antioch in the early fourth century and is venerated as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church and in the Roman Catholic Church. No reliable source records his year or place of birth, his parentage, or his education. What can be said of his earlier life depends almost entirely on a panegyric delivered at Antioch by John Chrysostom on 20 December 386, the day of the saint’s annual commemoration. According to that homily, Philogonius had practiced as an advocate in the courts of Antioch. Chrysostom portrays him as a lawyer of unusual integrity, who used his profession to defend the poor and the injured rather than to pursue wealth or influence, and who already showed the justice and restraint later expected of a bishop.

The same tradition, again going back to Chrysostom and repeated in later synaxaria and martyrologies, holds that Philogonius was married and that he had a daughter. The name of his wife is not preserved. He was chosen bishop of Antioch about 319, succeeding Vitalis. In the post-persecution church it was still possible for a man of established character to be taken from a secular career and raised quickly through holy orders; ancient writers present his election in that light. His short episcopate fell in the years after the Diocletianic persecution and during the first diffusion of the teaching of Arius. Later orthodox authors count him among the bishops who resisted Arianism before the Council of Nicaea and associate him with Alexander of Alexandria in defense of the full divinity of Christ. Antioch, an apostolic see and one of the principal churches of the Roman East, was already a contested prize in that doctrinal struggle.

Philogonius died in office, most probably in 323 (some lists give 324), and is commemorated on 20 December, the date on which Chrysostom later preached. After his death the succession at Antioch was disputed. Some sources name an Arian or Arianizing figure, Paulinus of Tyre, in the interval that followed; the orthodox party then secured the election of Eustathius, who represented Antioch at Nicaea in 325. No contemporary description of Philogonius’s burial survives, and no securely documented medieval translation of relics is known. His cult in the fourth century was local to Antioch and was maintained by the yearly liturgical memorial that occasioned Chrysostom’s sermon, which remains the chief literary witness to his life and character.

Later Eastern synaxaria and the Roman Martyrology entered his name on 20 December, recalling both his passage from the law courts to the episcopate and his stand, together with Alexander of Alexandria, for the Catholic faith against Arius. He appears in traditional lists of the bishops of Antioch, a see subsequently styled patriarchal, and is therefore counted among the early patriarchs of that church. Beyond the general honour attached to his office and to his opposition to heresy, no specialized patronages of places, professions, illnesses, or groups are attested in the historical record. The surviving portrait is that of a brief, firmly orthodox episcopate at a major Eastern see, illuminated almost solely by one late-fourth-century homily rather than by letters, canons, or a full contemporary biography.
