Biography

Short Description

Philologus of Sinope is numbered among the Seventy Apostles, also called the Seventy Disciples, in the tradition of the Eastern Orthodox Church. He appears in the New Testament only in a closing greeting of the Epistle to the Romans, where the Apostle Paul writes that the Roman community should greet Philologus together with Julia, Nereus and his sister, Olympas, and the saints with them (Romans 16:15). The canonical text gives no further information about his origin, family, or later career. In subsequent Christian memory he was identified as one of the wider circle of apostolic co-workers associated with the mission described in Luke 10, a group whose names were collected in later catalogues that circulated under the names of Hippolytus of Rome, Dorotheus of Tyre, and other compilers.

According to those lists and to Eastern hagiographical tradition, Philologus was a disciple of the Apostle Paul and was consecrated bishop of Sinope by the Apostle Andrew the First-Called. Sinope was an ancient Milesian colony on the southern shore of the Black Sea, in the region of Pontus in Asia Minor, on the site of the modern Turkish city of Sinop. Andrew’s traditional missionary itinerary along the Black Sea made him a natural figure to associate with the foundation of the church there. Whether Philologus was a native of Sinope or was sent to the city as bishop is not stated; the epithet “of Sinope” in later usage refers to his episcopal see rather than to a verified birthplace.

The catalogues of the Seventy that assign particular cities to particular names are products of late antique and medieval ecclesiastical tradition rather than of first-century documentation. Historians therefore treat the episcopal title with caution, while acknowledging that it has been the consistent Orthodox identification of Philologus for many centuries. Nothing reliable is recorded of the length of his episcopate, of any writings, or of the manner of his death. He is not described in the principal synaxaria as a martyr. No year of birth or death has been preserved, and he belongs simply to the apostolic generation of the first century. There is no evidence that he held patriarchal rank or the see of Rome, and no source documents a spouse or children, despite occasional modern speculation that the Julia named beside him in Romans 16 might have been related to him.

The Eastern Orthodox Church commemorates him on 5 November together with the Apostles Patrobas, Hermes, Linus, and Gaius, who are likewise numbered among the Seventy and mentioned in the Pauline epistles. He is also remembered on 4 January at the Synaxis of the Seventy Apostles. These liturgical observances, rather than a large independent hagiographical dossier or a famous shrine, have been the principal vehicle of his cult. He is not widely invoked as patron of particular places, professions, or causes in the way that some better-documented saints are. In the wider history of the early church he stands as a representative of the largely anonymous co-workers who, according to both scripture and tradition, assisted the leading apostles in the first expansion of Christianity in Asia Minor. The greeting in Romans at least confirms that a Christian named Philologus was known to Paul and to the Roman community in the mid-first century; the rest of his portrait belongs to the church’s received memory of the apostolic age.
