Biography

Short Description

The figure venerated in the Catholic Church as Saint Philomena (also encountered as Philomene, Filomena, or, in shortened English usage, Philomen) is connected with a burial discovered on 24–25 May 1802 in the Catacomb of Priscilla on the Via Salaria Nova in Rome. Diggers opened a loculus sealed by three terracotta tiles bearing fragments of red lettering. Rearranged, the letters were read as PAX TECUM FILUMENA, “Peace be with you, Philomena.” Painted symbols on the tiles—an anchor, a palm branch, arrows, and a floral motif—together with a small glass vial containing a desiccated residue then believed to be blood, were interpreted according to early-nineteenth-century catacomb scholarship as the marks of a youthful virgin martyr. Physical examination of the bones indicated a girl approximately thirteen to fifteen years of age. In 1805 the relics were entrusted to the Neapolitan priest Francesco De Lucia and translated to the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Mugnano del Cardinale, in the diocese of Nola, where they remain enshrined.

A local cult at Mugnano soon attracted wider attention through reports of healings and other favors. The 1835 cure of Pauline Marie Jaricot, foundress of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith and of the Living Rosary, after she had prayed at the shrine, made a strong impression in Rome. Jean-Marie Vianney, the curé of Ars, became an ardent promoter of the devotion and attributed numerous conversions and material helps to Philomena’s intercession. On 30 January 1837 Pope Gregory XVI formally authorized public liturgical veneration of the saint, an act that, for a martyr whose relics had been taken from the Roman catacombs, functioned in that era as official recognition. Throughout the later nineteenth and early twentieth centuries churches, altars, statues, and confraternities dedicated to her appeared across Europe and the Americas. Popes Leo XIII and Pius X expressed support for the cult; an archconfraternity was erected, and the sanctuary at Mugnano developed into an international place of pilgrimage.

The circumstantial “life” of Philomena that spread from 1833 onward did not rest on any ancient passio, martyrology, or inscription beyond the disputed tiles. It derived from private revelations said to have been granted to Sister Maria Luisa di Gesù, a Dominican tertiary in Naples. According to that visionary account, Philomena was a princess from the island of Corfu who had consecrated her virginity to God, refused marriage to the Emperor Diocletian, and endured a succession of tortures—scourging, attempted drowning with an anchor, arrows—before being beheaded in Rome in the early fourth century. No independent late-antique source confirms the existence of such a princess-martyr. Epigraphists have noted that the three tiles may have been reused from another grave and that other reconstructions of the lettering are possible. The contents of the vial were never subjected to conclusive scientific analysis. Responsible historical writing therefore treats the Corfu-and-Diocletian narrative as nineteenth-century pious literature rather than as recoverable biography.

In 1961 the Sacred Congregation of Rites, revising particular calendars and removing commemorations whose historical basis was judged insufficient, struck the feast of Saint Philomena from the general liturgical books. Private devotion was not forbidden, and the shrine at Mugnano has continued to draw pilgrims, especially around 10–11 August. Popular tradition still names her patron of children, infants, babies, and youth, of lost, forgotten, desperate, and impossible causes, of those suffering from sterility, and of the Living Rosary. A careful distinction is therefore required: an unidentified adolescent female was buried in the Priscilla catacomb; a vigorous modern cult, papally approved in 1837, grew around those relics and has never entirely disappeared; the detailed story of a Greek princess martyred under Diocletian cannot be verified from sources independent of nineteenth-century revelation. It is this layered history—archaeological find, authorized cult, and unconfirmed legend—that constitutes what can presently be said of the saint known as Philomen or Philomena.
