Biography

Short Description

Saint Philomena is a Christian figure whose public cult arose in the nineteenth century after remains were found on 25 May 1802 in the Catacombs of Priscilla on the Via Salaria in Rome. Excavators opened a loculus closed by three terracotta tiles whose painted fragments were read, when rearranged, as PAX TECUM FILUMENA (“Peace be with you, Philomena”). Inside were the bones of a young person identified as female and a small glass vial then taken as a martyr’s blood ampoule, a conventional sign used in catacomb archaeology of that era to mark a martyr’s grave. In 1805 Canon Francesco De Lucia obtained the relics and translated them to the church of Our Lady of Grace in Mugnano del Cardinale, near Naples, where they became the centre of a rapidly growing popular devotion and of a sanctuary that still houses them.

No contemporary literary, liturgical, or martyrological source from late antiquity mentions Philomena, and nothing historically verifiable is known of her birth, family, or death. The detailed life story that later circulated as her biography does not rest on ancient documents. It derives from private revelations reported in 1833 by Sister Maria Luisa di Gesù (Maria Luisa di Gesù), a Neapolitan Dominican tertiary, who described Philomena as the daughter of a Greek king converted to Christianity, brought to Rome, and martyred after refusing the emperor Diocletian. In that account she was a girl of about thirteen who survived several attempted executions before being beheaded. The Catholic Church has never required belief in this legend. Modern study has also questioned the original reading of the tiles (the letters may not have been meant to be rearranged) and the identification of the vial’s contents as blood. The historical existence of a second- or third-century martyr of this name therefore remains unproven.

Devotion nonetheless spread widely in the nineteenth century, fed by reported healings and by the advocacy of prominent Catholics. Pauline Jaricot, foundress of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith and of the Living Rosary, attributed a recovery at Mugnano in 1835 to Philomena’s intercession; Saint John Vianney, the Curé of Ars, became an ardent promoter of the cult and credited many graces to her. On 30 January 1837 Pope Gregory XVI authorized public liturgical veneration, allowing churches and altars to be dedicated in her honour and assigning a feast on 11 August. Later popes, including Pius IX, Leo XIII, and Pius X, showed personal favour to the devotion. She was never subjected to a formal modern process of beatification or canonization; the 1837 grant was a confirmation of cult rather than a canonization in the later canonical sense, and she was not entered in the Roman Martyrology as an historically attested saint.

In 1961 the Sacred Congregation of Rites removed her feast from the general Roman calendar because of insufficient historical evidence that the catacomb remains belonged to a known martyr named Philomena. Private devotion and local celebration were not suppressed, and the shrine at Mugnano del Cardinale has continued to receive pilgrims. She is invoked especially as a patron of children, youth, infants, lost and impossible causes, and those afflicted by sterility, and she remains closely associated with the Living Rosary. The case of Philomena thus stands as a striking instance of nineteenth-century catacomb piety and popular sanctity whose liturgical status was later restricted on historical-critical grounds, while a living cult and a body of reported favours have persisted around the relics translated from the Priscilla catacomb to Campania.
