Biography

Short Description

Philosoph Nikolaevich Ornatsky was a Russian Orthodox protoiereus (archpriest), preacher, and church public figure in late imperial Saint Petersburg, later glorified as a hieromartyr. He was born on 21 May 1860 in the village of Novaya Yerga, in the Cherepovets district of Novgorod Governorate, into the family of a parish priest. After formation at a diocesan theological school and the Novgorod Theological Seminary he studied at the Saint Petersburg Theological Academy, graduating in 1885. Ordained to the priesthood, he served his entire ministry in the capital. He became rector of the church of the Holy Right-Believing Prince Alexander Nevsky attached to the Expedition for the Preparation of State Papers, a major state printing and industrial establishment, and was widely known as an eloquent preacher.

In the last decades of the empire he was among the most active organizers of religious education and charity in Saint Petersburg. He chaired the Society for the Propagation of Religious and Moral Enlightenment in the Spirit of the Orthodox Church, which maintained churches, lecture halls, libraries, Sunday schools, and outreach among workers, students, and the urban poor, in part to counter secular and revolutionary ideologies. He also took part in the temperance movement, prison ministry, and various diocesan and civic committees. As a member of the married (white) clergy he and his wife raised a family; two of their sons, Nikolai and Boris, were arrested with him and died with him.

The revolutions of 1917 dismantled the institutional world in which he had worked. Church property was seized, religious societies were suppressed, and clergy were treated as class enemies. Father Philosoph continued to serve and to speak in defense of the Church. In 1918, during the Red Terror, he was arrested by the Cheka. On or about 30 October 1918 he was taken from prison and executed by firing squad together with his sons Nikolai and Boris. Contemporary accounts differ on the precise site—Petrograd itself or the vicinity of Kronstadt—and their remains were never identified or recovered.

The Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia included him among the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia in 1981. The Moscow Patriarchate canonized Hieromartyr Philosoph, priest, and his sons at the Jubilee Bishops’ Council of August 2000. He is commemorated on 31 October (Julian calendar) and also with the Synaxis of the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia. His life is remembered as that of a pastor of scholarly training and wide social work who remained with his flock in the capital through war and revolution and accepted death rather than abandon his priestly calling.
