Biography

Short Description

Saint Phocas, often called Phocas the Gardener, is a Christian martyr linked by ancient tradition to Sinope on the Black Sea coast of Pontus in Asia Minor. No contemporary document records the year of his birth, and even the century of his death is uncertain. Western hagiography commonly places the gardener in the third or early fourth century and associates his martyrdom with the persecution under Diocletian, while a parallel tradition commemorates a bishop of Sinope named Phocas who was said to have suffered under Trajan. Surviving Acts and homilies are late and legendary, and historians generally regard the two figures as possibly conflated or as products of local cult rather than as biographically recoverable persons.

The best-known story presents Phocas as a humble gardener who lived outside the walls of Sinope, cultivated vegetables, and used the produce to feed the poor and to welcome strangers. Soldiers charged with hunting down Christians accepted his hospitality. After they described their mission, he spent the night digging a grave in his garden, then identified himself in the morning and submitted to execution, usually described as beheading. A different set of texts portrays a bishop Phocas of Sinope who was imprisoned, exposed to wild beasts, and killed in a heated bath. Both accounts stress charity, courage, and forgiveness of persecutors. They cannot be confirmed from independent historical evidence.

Cult of a martyr Phocas at Sinope is already visible in the late fourth and early fifth centuries. Asterius of Amasea delivered a homily in his honor, and John Chrysostom alluded to a church of Phocas. Sailors of the Euxine and the Aegean adopted him as a protector against storm and shipwreck, and his tomb at Sinope drew pilgrims. Relics or claimed relics later appeared in Constantinople and in the Latin West, notably at Vienne in Gaul. Liturgical calendars disagree on the date: the Roman Martyrology lists a bishop Phocas of Sinope on 14 July; many Western sources keep the gardener on 23 July; Byzantine usage often assigns 22 September. In art he appears with a spade or other gardening implements, sometimes with a boat.

Phocas is invoked as patron of gardeners, agricultural laborers, sailors, and mariners, and he has been called upon against snakebite, drowning, and shipwreck. He held neither the papacy nor a patriarchal see, belonged to no religious order, and is not recorded as having a spouse or children. Recognition of his sanctity belongs to the early Christian veneration of martyrs, not to a later papal canonization or beatification. Beyond the place-name Sinope and the existence of an early cult, almost every biographical detail remains unverified; the legends nevertheless illustrate how late antique Christians remembered hospitality and steadfastness in persecution.
