Biography

Short Description

Photios of Korytsa (Photios Kalpidis) was a Greek Orthodox metropolitan of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople who held the see of Korytsa (Korçë) in the last years of Ottoman rule in the western Balkans and is commemorated in Eastern Orthodox tradition as a hieromartyr. He was born in 1862 in the village of Çakırca (Greek: Tsakirtza), in the hinterland of Nicomedia (İzmit) in Bithynia, Asia Minor, then a province of the Ottoman Empire. As was customary for candidates destined for higher office in the Patriarchate, he received his theological education at the Theological School of Halki on Heybeliada in the Sea of Marmara, the Patriarchate’s principal seminary in the nineteenth century. After his studies he entered the celibate clergy and served in teaching and pastoral capacities before being raised to the episcopate. Orthodox bishops of this period were drawn from the monastic or otherwise unmarried clergy; there is no record of a marriage or of children.

In 1903 Photios was elected Metropolitan of Korytsa and Premeti, a diocese of the Ecumenical Patriarchate whose centre was the town of Korçë (Korytsa) and which also included Përmet and neighbouring districts in what is now southeastern Albania. He occupied the see from 1903 until his death in 1906. The Orthodox flock of the region was linguistically mixed, comprising both Greek-speaking and Albanian-speaking Christians. Late Ottoman Korçë was a notable educational centre: Greek-language church schools operated under patriarchal auspices, while Albanian nationalists had opened the first Albanian-language school there in 1887. In that setting the metropolitan was not only a liturgical and canonical figure but also a public representative of the Patriarchate’s Greek-language ecclesiastical culture. Albanian national activists of the period often regarded that culture as an obstacle to Albanian education and identity; Greek communities regarded the same institutions as the legitimate continuation of Orthodox life. Photios’s brief tenure therefore coincided with intensifying national competition in Epirus and Macedonia, including the years of the so-called Macedonian Struggle, when armed bands, teachers, and clergy were frequently drawn into political conflict.

On 9 September 1906, while travelling in the Korçë district in the course of his archpastoral work, Metropolitan Photios was attacked and killed. Contemporary reporting and later historical literature attribute the assassination to an Albanian nationalist guerrilla band; the killing is commonly associated with the circle of Bajo Topulli, a leading figure of the Albanian national movement in the south. The precise tactical details of the ambush are not established with uniform clarity in the sources, but the date and the fact of the metropolitan’s violent death are not in doubt. Greek ecclesiastical and community accounts immediately interpreted the murder as martyrdom for the Orthodox Church and for the Greek character of the local church organisation. The episode belongs to a wider pattern of late Ottoman violence in which bishops, priests, and schoolmasters were sometimes targeted as symbols of rival national causes in Macedonia and Epirus on the eve of the Balkan Wars.

After his death Photios was remembered among the Orthodox as a hieromartyr, that is, a bishop who died a violent death in connection with his office and faith. Eastern Orthodox calendars commemorate him on 9 September. He is recalled especially in Greek Orthodox tradition and among communities historically linked to Northern Epirus (southern Albania). Formal particulars of any later synodal act of glorification are not consistently recorded in widely available reference works, and claims about burial, relics, or specific patronages should be treated with caution where they are not independently documented. What can be stated with confidence is the outline of his career: a Halki-trained hierarch of Bithynian origin, metropolitan of Korytsa from 1903, killed in 1906 in the Korçë region, and thereafter honoured in Orthodox memory as a bishop-martyr of the final Ottoman generation.
