Biography

Short Description

Pier Giorgio Michelangelo Frassati was born on 6 April 1901 in Turin, then in the Kingdom of Italy, the son of Alfredo Frassati and Adelaide Ametis. Alfredo was an agnostic liberal, founder and owner of the Turin newspaper La Stampa, and later Italian ambassador to Germany; Adelaide was a painter. The household was cultured and prosperous but religiously lukewarm, and Pier Giorgio's deepening Catholic faith developed largely on his own. He was educated in Turin, including a period with the Jesuits at the Istituto Sociale, and in 1918 he enrolled at the Royal Polytechnic of Turin to study mining engineering, a path he chose because he hoped to work among miners and to apply Catholic social teaching to industrial life.

As a teenager he joined the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and began regular visits to the poor, the sick, and war veterans in Turin's working-class districts. He gave away his allowance, pawned his own possessions, and often walked home so that he could give his tram fare to someone in need; much of this charity was hidden from his family. He belonged to Catholic Action and to the Italian Catholic University Federation. On 28 May 1922 he made profession in the Third Order of Saint Dominic, taking the name Girolamo after the Dominican Girolamo Savonarola. He attended daily Mass, spent nights in Eucharistic adoration, and kept a simple personal rule of prayer alongside his studies and social work. He did not marry: a possible match with Laura Hidalgo was opposed by his parents on social grounds, and he remained a celibate layman.

Frassati was also known for mountaineering and skiing in the Alps, which he treated as both recreation and apostolate. A photograph of him on a peak, inscribed "Verso l'alto" ("Toward the heights"), became an emblem of his spirituality. In the early 1920s he opposed the rising Fascist movement, took part in Catholic demonstrations, and was involved in at least one clash with Fascist militants. He read the social encyclicals and supported Christian-democratic and Catholic labour initiatives, combining a comfortable family background with a deliberately simple personal life.

In late June 1925 he contracted poliomyelitis, believed to have been caught while serving the sick. He died at home in Turin on 4 July 1925, aged twenty-four. At his funeral, crowds of the city's poor, whose existence in his life his family had scarcely known, lined the streets. He was first buried in the family chapel at Pollone; in 1981 his remains were translated to the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist in Turin. Pope John Paul II beatified him in Saint Peter's Square on 20 May 1990, calling him "the man of the eight Beatitudes" and offering him as a model for the young. His liturgical memorial is kept on 4 July.
