Biography
Pierina Morosini was born on 7 January 1931 in the hamlet of Fiobbio, in the commune of Albino in the province of Bergamo, Lombardy, in northern Italy. She was the eldest of nine children of Rocco Morosini and Sara Noris, members of a poor and devoutly Catholic family of farmers and laborers. From childhood she helped her mother with household work and with the care of her younger brothers and sisters. She received her First Holy Communion in 1938 and Confirmation in 1940, and from an early age she took part in parish life and in Catholic Action. Her schooling was brief, as family need soon required her labor.
To help support her large household, Pierina began work as a young teenager in a textile mill in Albino. She walked daily to and from the factory along country paths. Companions remembered her cheerfulness, diligence, and piety. She attended Mass as often as her work allowed, prayed the Rosary, and remained active in Catholic Action. She felt a call to religious life as a missionary sister, but she set that desire aside in order to remain at home and assist her parents, especially after her mother suffered an injury that limited her ability to manage the household. She continued in this hidden life of work, family duty, and prayer into her mid-twenties.
On the afternoon of 4 April 1957, while walking home from the mill, Pierina was assaulted by a young man who attempted to rape her. She resisted the attack in defense of her chastity. The assailant struck her repeatedly on the head with a stone, inflicting fatal injuries. She was found unconscious by one of her brothers and taken to hospital in Bergamo. She never recovered consciousness. She received the last sacraments and died of her wounds on 6 April 1957, at the age of twenty-six.
Her death was at once regarded by many in the Bergamo region as a martyrdom in defense of purity, in the tradition of figures such as Maria Goretti. Devotion to her memory spread locally, and a cause for beatification was introduced. Pope John Paul II beatified her on 4 October 1987 in Saint Peter's Square, recognizing her as a martyr. She has not been canonized. She is commemorated on 6 April and is invoked especially by victims of sexual violence. Her remains are venerated in the parish church of Fiobbio.
