Biography

Short Description

Pierius was a Christian presbyter of the Church of Alexandria in the later third century, active in the time of Bishop Theonas of Alexandria (episcopate c. 282–300) and remembered in connection with the city’s catechetical school. The chief ancient witnesses are Eusebius of Caesarea in the Church History, Jerome in De viris illustribus, and Photius of Constantinople in the Bibliotheca. Eusebius presents him as a priest distinguished for voluntary poverty and for philosophical learning, and as an able preacher. Jerome states that under Theonas he was a presbyter of the Alexandrian church and master of the catechetical school, that he taught the people with great success, and that he wrote many treatises. He belongs to the Origenist scholarly succession of Alexandria—after figures such as Clement, Origen, Heraclas, Dionysius, and Theognostus—as a teacher and preacher rather than as a bishop. No reliable source records his year or place of birth; that he served in Alexandria does not by itself prove that he was born there.

Because of his erudition, eloquence, and austere manner of life he was nicknamed Origen the Younger. The nickname reflects both his intellectual debt to Origen’s biblical and philosophical methods and the ascetic, almost philosophical poverty that Eusebius emphasizes. That documented ascetic and philosophical way of life is the basis for treating him as unmarried; nothing in the surviving notices mentions a wife or children. Pamphilus of Caesarea, the learned presbyter later martyred in the Great Persecution, is associated with him in later tradition as a hearer, pupil, or close friend; the precise nature of the relationship is not fixed by a contemporary narrative. Pierius’s importance is that of a late third-century Alexandrian teacher who carried Origen’s scholarly and homiletic tradition down to the eve of the Diocletianic persecution.

Photius still possessed a volume of twelve of Pierius’s discourses and describes a clear, brilliant style and an Origenist handling of Scripture. He also records opinions that later readers found problematic, including language that seemed to rank the Holy Spirit below the Father and the Son and possible sympathy with the pre-existence of souls, together with other passages in which Pierius spoke of the Father and the Son as of one substance. Only fragments and titles survive, among them homiletic material connected with the prophet Hosea and a discourse for Pentecost. These remains, together with Photius’s summary, are the main evidence for his theology and preaching. He was never Bishop of Rome and never patriarch or bishop of Alexandria; his recorded rank is that of presbyter and schoolmaster.

The end of his life is reported in two traditions. Photius notes that some said Pierius died a martyr, while others said that after the persecution under Diocletian he withdrew to Rome. Jerome follows the second account: after the persecution Pierius lived at Rome until his death. Historians generally prefer Jerome, which places the death in Rome in the early fourth century once the Great Persecution had ended or subsided. No dated ancient testimony supplies a precise year of death; figures such as 309 that appear in later reference works are conventional approximations, not statements drawn from Eusebius or Jerome. His burial place is unknown. He was remembered as a saint in some later martyrologies and calendars, and a feast on 4 November has been associated with his name. Beyond the priestly and ascetic life described by Eusebius and Jerome, details of family, a formal religious order, canonization or beatification by a named later pope, and any specific patronages are not preserved in the surviving historical record.
