Biography
Pierre Bonhomme was born in 1803 in Gramat, in the Lot department of southwestern France, in the historic region of Quercy. He grew up in a Catholic family in the decades after the French Revolution, when the Church in France was still rebuilding its parish life and institutions. Drawn to the priesthood, he entered seminary formation for the Diocese of Cahors and was ordained a priest in 1827. His ministry remained closely tied to his native district: he served as a diocesan priest rather than as a member of a religious order, and Gramat became the centre of his pastoral work for most of his life.
In Gramat he combined ordinary parish care with a strong emphasis on education and on the poor. He opened a school for boys and later founded an institution for deaf children, at a time when specialized instruction of that kind was uncommon in rural France. Confronted with sickness, old age, and neglected or abandoned children, he gathered a group of women who in the 1830s formed the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Calvary (Sœurs de Notre-Dame du Calvaire). The sisters devoted themselves to teaching, nursing, and other works of charity. The congregation took its name from a calvary—a sculpted representation of the Passion—that Bonhomme had erected as a focus of popular devotion.
Bonhomme was also known as a preacher of parish missions in the surrounding countryside, seeking the religious instruction and moral renewal of rural communities in the post-Revolutionary and post-Napoleonic period. He continued to guide the young congregation while remaining a secular priest of the Diocese of Cahors. In his later years his health declined. He died in Gramat in 1861.
A reputation for holiness persisted after his death among local people and among the sisters he had founded. A cause for beatification was eventually introduced at Rome. Pope John Paul II beatified him in 2003. He has not been canonized. The Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Calvary has continued educational and charitable work in France and elsewhere. Blessed Pierre Bonhomme is commemorated on 9 September, the anniversary of his death.
