Biography

Short Description

Pierre-Rose-Ursule Dumoulin-Borie was born on 20 February 1808 in the commune of Beynat, in the Corrèze department of central France. He grew up in a Catholic family in the post-Revolutionary and Napoleonic period and pursued studies for the priesthood, including formation connected with the diocese of Tulle, before discerning a missionary vocation. He entered the Société des Missions Étrangères de Paris (Paris Foreign Missions Society), a society of apostolic life of secular priests devoted to evangelization in East and Southeast Asia. After ordination to the priesthood in the early 1830s he was sent to the mission of Tonkin, in the northern part of present-day Vietnam.

He reached Tonkin in 1832, as the Nguyễn emperor Minh Mạng was tightening edicts against Christianity. Those measures forbade Catholic teaching and worship, hunted foreign missionaries, and punished Vietnamese converts. Dumoulin-Borie nonetheless worked among scattered Catholic communities in Western Tonkin, traveling discreetly, celebrating the sacraments in secret, and cooperating with Vietnamese priests and catechists. In 1838 the Holy See named him titular bishop of Acanthus and appointed him to the vicariate, but he was never consecrated; arrest came before any episcopal ordination could take place.

Captured by imperial officials in 1838, he was imprisoned, interrogated, and condemned for his priestly ministry and refusal to renounce the faith. On 24 November 1838 he was executed by beheading at Đồng Hới, in what is now Quảng Bình Province. His death belonged to a wider pattern of executions of missionaries and Vietnamese Christians under Minh Mạng and later rulers, which became the historical core of the group known as the Vietnamese Martyrs.

The Church recognized his death as martyrdom. Pope Leo XIII beatified him on 27 May 1900 with other martyrs of Annam. On 19 June 1988 Pope John Paul II canonized him among the 117 Martyrs of Vietnam, commemorated as Saint Andrew Dũng-Lạc and Companions. Their collective feast in the General Roman Calendar is 24 November. Dumoulin-Borie is venerated in France and Vietnam as a missionary priest of the Paris Foreign Missions Society who died for the faith in nineteenth-century Tonkin.
