Biography

Pietro Casani was born in 1572 in Lucca, a city in Tuscany that was then an independent republic. He came from a noble family and received a solid education before being ordained a priest. In the climate of Catholic reform that characterized late sixteenth-century Italy, he first associated himself with the Clerics Regular of the Mother of God, the congregation established by his fellow Lucchese Saint John Leonardi. His priestly life was oriented toward pastoral care and the spiritual renewal of the Church.

Drawn to the innovative apostolate of Saint Joseph Calasanz, who had begun offering free education to the poorest children of Rome, Casani became one of the founder's earliest and closest collaborators. He entered the community of the Pious Schools and, when Pope Paul V erected it as a religious order in 1617, was among the first to profess vows as a Piarist. Casani served the new institute in positions of government, including as Assistant General. He helped shape its constitutions, trained its members, and supported the opening of schools dedicated to the Christian and human formation of poor youth, a work that was still unusual in that era.

The Piarist order underwent a severe crisis in the 1640s. Rivalries, calumnies, and misunderstandings led Pope Innocent X in 1646 to reduce the order to the status of a congregation without solemn vows, a decision that caused great suffering to Calasanz and his companions. Throughout these trials Casani remained a figure of calm fidelity, obedience, and trust in divine providence. He continued to live the Piarist charism of poverty and service to children even when the institutional future of the order appeared uncertain.

Casani died in Rome on 17 October 1647 and was interred in the church of San Pantaleo, the Roman house of the Piarists. Devotion to him persisted within the order. After the ordinary process and the recognition of his heroic virtues, Pope John Paul II beatified him on 1 October 1995. Blessed Pietro Casani is venerated as a model of religious perseverance and as a co-worker in the great educational mission launched by Saint Joseph Calasanz. His liturgical memorial is kept on 17 October.
