Biography

Short Description

Pietro Gambacorta was born in 1355 in Pisa, then an independent maritime republic in Tuscany, as a member of the noble Gambacorta family, which in the later fourteenth century stood among the leading Guelph houses of the city and for a time dominated its government. Independent contemporary documentation of his childhood and youth is scarce. Later hagiographical notices, composed in the idiom of late medieval conversion stories, describe a young man formed by the privileges and secular occupations of urban nobility who, in his early twenties, underwent a decisive religious change of life. Turning from political and worldly prospects, he left Pisa and sought solitude and penance in the Apennine country of the Marche, in the territory of Urbino.

By about 1377–1380 he had settled as a hermit at Montebello, near Urbino. Other men drawn to an austere eremitical ideal joined him, and from this small settlement there grew a new religious family, the Poor Hermits of Saint Jerome (the Hieronymites of the Congregation of Blessed Peter of Pisa). The hermits combined withdrawal and penance with a modest common life, took Saint Jerome as a model of conversion, scriptural seriousness, and desert discipline, and followed a rule inspired by that of Saint Augustine. Among figures associated with the early history of the group was Nicola da Forca Palena, later himself venerated as blessed, who would establish a related Hieronymite house in Rome. Precise details of daily observance in the first years remain limited; what the sources consistently attest is a reputation for austerity and a rapid attraction of companions in central Italy.

The congregation acquired firmer canonical standing in the early fifteenth century, after the Western Schism. Pope Martin V approved the institute in 1421, which allowed the Poor Hermits to found and regularize houses more securely. Communities appeared in various parts of central and northern Italy. Gambacorta remained the principal founder and guide of the congregation, directing its expansion while continuing to live according to the hermits’ observances rather than as a prelate in the ordinary sense. In his later years he was active in Venice, where a house of the Poor Hermits was established. He died in that city on 17 June 1435, at about eighty years of age.

After his death he was venerated by his religious brethren and by the faithful in places where the congregation had taken root. Pope Innocent XII confirmed his cult in 1693, and he is honored as blessed in the Catholic Church; he was not subsequently canonized. His feast is kept on 17 June. The congregation he founded continued for centuries as one of several distinct Hieronymite families in Italy, separate from the Spanish Order of Saint Jerome and from the Jesuati, before it was eventually suppressed in the modern period. Surviving evidence for many particulars of his inner life, family relationships, and day-to-day government of the order is thin, and later biographies tend to repeat a relatively small set of traditional notices rather than a richly documented personal archive.
