Biography

Short Description

Pietro Võ Đăng Khoa (Vietnamese: Phêrô Võ Đăng Khoa) was a Catholic priest and martyr in nineteenth-century Vietnam. He was born in 1790 in the village of Đại Phong, in what is now Quảng Trạch district, Quảng Bình province, in central Vietnam. At the time the region formed part of the Nguyễn empire, often called Đại Nam in Vietnamese sources. Almost nothing reliable has been preserved about his parents, education, or the date of his ordination; like many of the Vietnamese martyrs he is known primarily from the record of his arrest and death and from the later processes of beatification. He served as a diocesan priest, not as a member of a religious order, among local Catholic communities that had grown since the seventeenth century through the work of missionaries, especially the Paris Foreign Missions Society, and of native clergy.

The reign of Emperor Minh Mạng (1820–1841) marked one of the harshest phases of official persecution of Christianity in Vietnam. The emperor issued edicts that banned the faith, required suspected Christians to recant by trampling a crucifix, and imposed imprisonment, torture, and capital punishment on those who refused. Catholicism was portrayed as a heterodox foreign teaching that threatened Confucian hierarchy and loyalty to the throne. Despite the danger, Father Võ Đăng Khoa continued to exercise his priestly ministry. In 1838, during a renewed enforcement of the anti-Christian laws, he was arrested.

According to the martyrological tradition accepted in his cause, he would not apostatize. He was condemned and executed by strangulation on 24 December 1838 at Đồng Hới, the principal fortress-town of Quảng Bình. Strangulation was a method of execution frequently used for Christian convicts in this period. His death belonged to a cluster of executions of priests and lay people in 1838–1839 in both Tonkin and the central provinces. No detailed contemporary trial transcript for him is widely published in Western languages; the outline of priesthood, refusal to recant, and death by strangulation is what the Church’s later investigation retained.

He was among the sixty-four Vietnamese martyrs beatified by Pope Leo XIII on 27 May 1900. On 19 June 1988 Pope John Paul II canonized one hundred and seventeen martyrs of Vietnam as a single group, including Pietro Võ Đăng Khoa. The group is inscribed in the General Roman Calendar on 24 November. Devotion to him is almost entirely as one of the Vietnamese Martyrs rather than as a saint with a separate cult or distinctive patronages. Historical documentation of his personal life remains sparse, and cautious accounts therefore confine themselves to his origin in Quảng Bình, his diocesan priesthood, and his martyrdom under Minh Mạng.
