Biography

Short Description

Pior, often called Abba Pior in monastic literature, was a fourth-century Egyptian Christian hermit counted among the Desert Fathers. The principal early witness is Palladius of Galatia, who devoted a short chapter of the Lausiac History to him and described him as Egyptian by race. While still a young man Pior left his father's house in order to become a monk and bound himself by a vow never again to look upon any of his relatives. He lived in the Egyptian desert in the orbit of the communities of Scetis (Scete). The Roman Martyrology later styles him a disciple of Anthony the Great; Palladius does not state that relationship in so many words in the Pior chapter, and the claim should be treated as later liturgical tradition rather than as a fact independently attested in the earliest narrative sources.

After some fifty years of this seclusion, Pior's sister, by then an old woman, learned that he was still alive and could not bear to remain without seeing him. She asked the bishop of her district to write to the fathers of Scetis and request that they send her brother. The monks sent him. He went as far as the door of her house, recognized her voice, shut his eyes, called out that he was Pior her brother, invited her to look at him as much as she wished, and then returned to the desert without having eaten anything. The story was remembered as a severe illustration of fidelity to a youthful vow and of detachment from family ties, not as a denial of natural affection but as an extreme form of the anachoretic break with the world.

Palladius and the alphabetical collection of the Sayings of the Desert Fathers also preserve anecdotes of Pior's discipline around food, work, and place. He was said to eat while walking rather than sitting down to a meal, explaining that he did not wish eating to become a principal occupation but only something done in passing. He once dug for water in an apparently waterless spot and persisted until a well appeared; the act was understood as trust in providence and as a decision to remain where he believed God had set him, rather than to wander in search of easier conditions. In the apophthegms he figures as a model of humility. One saying reports that when, near the end of his life, the brethren asked him for a word, he answered that he was going to the Lord as one who had not yet begun to serve Him.

No contemporary source records the year of Pior's birth or death, the name of his native village, or the precise site of his burial. Later hagiographical notices sometimes place his death toward the close of the fourth century, but that dating is traditional rather than demonstrated from Palladius or from the Historia monachorum in Aegypto. He is commemorated as an Egyptian anchorite in the Roman Martyrology on 17 June. His memory belongs to the common cult of the Desert Fathers in East and West; no verified list of patronages, no act of papal canonization, and no independent biography beyond the short monastic anecdotes survive. What can be said with confidence is limited to the Egyptian origin, the long eremitical life in the Scetis milieu, the vow concerning relatives, and the handful of sayings and stories that monastic compilers thought worth preserving as examples of ascesis and humility.
