Biography
Piotr Edward Dańkowski was a Polish Roman Catholic diocesan priest of the Archdiocese of Kraków and one of the 108 Martyrs of World War II. He was born on 21 June 1908 in Jordanów, a small town in the historical region of Galicia, then part of Austria-Hungary and today in southern Poland. He belonged to the Latin-rite secular clergy rather than to a religious order. After seminary formation for Kraków he was ordained a priest in 1931. His early ministry unfolded in the interwar Polish Second Republic, in a strongly Catholic highland region of the former Galician lands.
As a parish priest he served in the Kraków archdiocese in the years before and at the beginning of the German occupation. Available reference notices associate his pastoral work with the southern, mountainous part of the diocese, including the Zakopane area. Like much of the Polish clergy, he continued sacramental and pastoral duties after the September 1939 invasion, under a regime that treated the Catholic Church as a mainstay of Polish national life and therefore as a target. Systematic arrests of priests, teachers, and other local leaders formed part of the occupation policy in the General Government.
In 1941 Dańkowski was arrested by the German Gestapo. After imprisonment he was deported to the Auschwitz concentration camp near Oświęcim. Large numbers of Polish priests died there from starvation, forced labor, disease, and violence. Camp and later martyrological records give his death as 3 April 1942, when he was thirty-three. No verified burial place survives; victims at Auschwitz were as a rule cremated, and no independent grave is documented for him.
On 13 June 1999, during a Mass in Warsaw, Pope John Paul II beatified 108 Polish victims of Nazi persecution, among them Father Piotr Edward Dańkowski. They are venerated together as the 108 Martyrs of World War II, whose liturgical memorial in the Catholic Church in Poland falls on 12 June. He has not been canonized. Beyond the securely attested facts of his birth, priesthood, arrest, and death at Auschwitz, detailed independent documentation of his family background, exact parish assignments, and the precise circumstances of his arrest remains limited in widely available historical sources. He is known primarily as one of the beatified Polish diocesan clergy who perished in German concentration camps.
