Biography

Short Description

Piotr Wang Erman, known in Chinese as Wang Erman, was a Catholic layman from northern China who was put to death during the Boxer Rebellion at the turn of the twentieth century. He was born in 1864 in Hebei province (then often called Chihli) in the late Qing period, a region where Catholic village communities had taken root through Jesuit and other missionary work from the seventeenth century onward. Surviving notices describe him as a farmer living within one of these rural congregations. Almost nothing is recorded of his family, education, or private life, which is typical for ordinary Chinese faithful of that era; he enters the historical record chiefly as one of the Catholics killed in 1900 for refusing to abandon their religion.

The Boxer uprising, or Yihetuan Movement, reached its height in the summer of 1900. It combined popular xenophobia, hardship, and shifting Qing policy toward foreigners and Christians. In Hebei and neighboring provinces, Boxer bands and local militias attacked mission stations and Catholic villages. Chinese Christians were commonly ordered to apostatize, sometimes by trampling a cross; those who would not comply were killed, often in groups. Wang Erman was among the victims of this persecution. Church tradition places his death in July 1900, during the worst weeks of violence in his district. He was not a priest or a member of a religious order, but one of the large number of lay Catholics who formed the majority of those later honored as the Martyr Saints of China.

Because so little personal testimony about him survives, his biography cannot be reconstructed with the fullness possible for better-documented companions such as the missionary bishops or the young martyr Anna Wang. He belongs to the tradition of village Catholics whose names were preserved by their communities and later gathered into the Roman causes. His name stands among the eighty-seven Chinese Catholics who, together with thirty-three foreign missionaries, make up the group of one hundred and twenty Martyr Saints of China. That group represents persecutions from the mid-seventeenth century to 1930, with the heaviest concentration of deaths in the Boxer year 1900.

The Holy See examined these causes in several groups during the twentieth century. Wang Erman was beatified by Pope Pius XII together with other victims of the 1900 persecution. On 1 October 2000 Pope John Paul II canonized the entire group of one hundred and twenty in Saint Peter's Square, presenting them as witnesses who had remained faithful under extreme trial. Their common liturgical memorial is kept on 9 July. Piotr Wang Erman is not associated in standard hagiography with particular local, occupational, or other individual patronages; he is venerated with his companions as a martyr of the Chinese Church and as a representative of the rural Catholic communities of Hebei at the end of the nineteenth century.
