Biography

Short Description

Placide Viel was born Eulalie Jacqueline Viel in 1815 in Quettehou, a village on the Cotentin peninsula in the Manche department of Normandy, in northwestern France. She grew up in a rural Catholic setting in the generation that followed the French Revolution and the Napoleonic wars, when teaching congregations were being refounded and Catholic elementary schooling for the poor was being rebuilt. In 1835 she entered the Sisters of the Christian Schools of Mercy (Sœurs des Écoles Chrétiennes de la Miséricorde), a congregation established in 1807 by Marie-Madeleine Postel (born Julie Postel) for the Christian education of girls, especially those of modest means. The community had taken as its motherhouse the former Benedictine abbey of Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte, which the foundress was restoring. Received under the religious name Placide, she was a relative of Marie-Madeleine Postel and became one of the foundress’s closest collaborators as the still-small institute sought internal stability and a recognized place in French Catholic life.

After Marie-Madeleine Postel died in 1846, Sister Placide was elected to succeed her as Superior General, though she was only about thirty. The succession was not without difficulty: her youth and the congregation’s humble origins led some sisters to doubt whether she could govern. She nonetheless took up the office and retained it until her death some three decades later. As superior she worked to preserve the founder’s charism—free or low-cost Christian schooling, especially for poor children—while giving the institute a more durable organization, a regular novitiate, and a clearer legal footing. The mid-nineteenth century in France was marked by shifting regimes and by recurring disputes over the place of religious congregations in public education; securing civil authorization and the right to conduct schools was therefore a central part of her government.

Under her long generalate the congregation expanded well beyond its Norman cradle. New houses and schools were opened in various parts of France, and the number of sisters grew substantially from the small community she had inherited. She continued the restoration and use of the abbey of Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte as motherhouse and formation center. Contemporary accounts from within the congregation present her as a practical administrator who combined fidelity to Postel’s educational and spiritual aims with the day-to-day work of a teaching institute in the France of the July Monarchy, the Second Republic, and the Second Empire. Detailed independent documentation of her interior life is limited; what survives is largely congregational and regional Catholic tradition, which remembers her as the foundress’s heir rather than as a public figure in her own right.

Placide Viel died at Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte in 1877. A local and congregational cult developed around her memory, strengthened in the twentieth century after Marie-Madeleine Postel’s canonization in 1925 drew attention to the early history of the Sisters of the Christian Schools of Mercy. The Holy See examined Viel’s life and reputation for holiness, and she was beatified by Pope Pius XII in 1951. She has not been canonized. Her liturgical memorial is kept on 4 March, the anniversary of her death. She remains a relatively little-known blessed outside her congregation and Norman Catholic circles, but she is a documented figure in the nineteenth-century history of French teaching sisters and in the consolidation of Postel’s foundation.
