Biography

Short Description

Plato was an Athenian philosopher of the Classical Greek period, active in the late fifth and fourth centuries BC. He belonged to a prominent aristocratic family: his father Ariston was said to trace descent from the early kings of Athens, and his mother Perictione was related to the lawgiver Solon. Ancient biographers name his brothers Adeimantus and Glaucon, who appear as interlocutors in the Republic, and a sister Potone, whose son Speusippus later succeeded Plato as head of the Academy. Later tradition sometimes claimed that his given name was Aristocles and that Plato was a nickname referring to breadth of chest or of style, but this cannot be confirmed from contemporary evidence. Most ancient and modern accounts place his birth in Athens, though a minority tradition associated it with the island of Aegina, where his family may have held property during a period of Athenian settlement. Precise years of birth are not securely attested; Hellenistic chronographers offered competing dates in the 420s BC, and modern reference works therefore give only an approximate range.

As a young man Plato associated with the circle of Socrates. The execution of Socrates by the restored Athenian democracy in 399 BC marked a decisive turn in his life; the early dialogues present a literary portrait of Socratic questioning and of the trial and its aftermath. In the years that followed he is reported to have left Athens and traveled. Later sources mention sojourns in southern Italy and Sicily, contact with Pythagorean communities, and possibly Egypt, though the extent, order, and even historicity of some of these journeys remain uncertain and are mixed with legend. He made three visits to Syracuse, first during the tyranny of Dionysius I and later under Dionysius II, in close connection with Dion of Syracuse. These episodes, described in part in the Seventh Letter, a text whose Platonic authorship is still debated, reflect an effort to influence a ruling house toward a more philosophical form of government. They ended in political failure, the exile and death of Dion, and, according to some ancient reports, serious personal risk to Plato himself.

In the 380s BC, after returning to Athens, Plato established a school in a grove dedicated to the hero Academus, northwest of the city walls. The Academy became a lasting center for mathematical, dialectical, and political inquiry. Plato taught and wrote there for the rest of his life. His surviving corpus consists almost entirely of dialogues, often classified by modern scholars into early, middle, and late groups. Among them are the Apology, Crito, and Euthyphro; the Gorgias, Meno, Symposium, Phaedo, Republic, and Phaedrus; and later works including the Theaetetus, Sophist, Statesman, Parmenides, Timaeus, Philebus, and the Laws, the last of which does not feature Socrates as the principal speaker. Recurring themes include the distinction between knowledge and opinion, the theory of Forms, the immortality and parts of the soul, the education of rulers, and the idea of the good. Aristotle came from Stagira to study at the Academy and remained for many years before founding the Lyceum.

Plato died in Athens in the mid-fourth century BC and, according to ancient testimony preserved by Diogenes Laertius and Pausanias, was buried in the grounds of the Academy. Reports of his exact age and of the year of death vary slightly among Hellenistic chronographers, and anecdotal stories about his final hours are not independently verifiable. No wife or children are recorded in the biographical tradition; a will preserved by Diogenes Laertius disposes of property without reference to a spouse or offspring, and leadership of the Academy passed to his nephew Speusippus. Plato’s dialogues were copied and studied through the Hellenistic schools, Middle Platonism, and Neoplatonism, and they entered Latin and later European thought as a central pillar of philosophy, theology, and political theory.
