Biography

Short Description

Saint Plautilla is venerated in the Roman Catholic Church as a holy woman of first-century Rome. The Roman Martyrology commemorates her on 20 May with the notice that at Rome a woman of consular rank named Plautilla was baptized by the Apostle Peter and, after many works of piety, rested in peace. Older editions of the Martyrology further styled her the mother of Saint Flavia Domitilla and associated her with the consular Flavian family. Medieval writers sometimes identified her as a sister of the consul Titus Flavius Clemens, a kinsman of the emperor Domitian who was executed in the mid-90s. Modern historians treat these kinship claims with great caution, because they appear to rest on a later conflation of several Flavian names connected with early Roman Christianity rather than on any contemporary document that names Plautilla herself.

The legend most often attached to her concerns the martyrdom of the Apostle Paul. Medieval narrative collections, including the Golden Legend, relate that Plautilla met Paul as he was being led out along the Ostian Way to execution and gave him her veil with which to bind his eyes. After his beheading he is said to have appeared to her and to have returned the veil stained with his blood, which she thereafter kept as a relic. The story cannot be corroborated by first-century sources and is regarded as pious legend, yet it shaped her later cult and bound her memory to that of Saint Paul. Nothing in the surviving acts of the apostles or in early Roman church orders independently confirms her presence at the execution.

Outside the Martyrology and this medieval tale, independent historical evidence for Plautilla is lacking. It is well established that some members of the Flavian house in the late first century had links with Christianity: Clemens was put to death under Domitian, and a Flavia Domitilla was exiled for her faith. Whether a distinct woman named Plautilla belonged to that circle, was personally baptized by Peter, or lived into Domitian’s reign cannot be verified from non-hagiographical records. She is remembered liturgically as a Roman matron of the apostolic age who died a peaceful death rather than as a martyr. No year of birth or death, no husband’s name, and no burial site are recorded in sources that can be checked.

Her cult is of the ancient, pre-congregational type; she was never the object of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or modern kind. No specific patronages of places, professions, or causes are securely attached to her name in later Catholic tradition. Beyond the brief Roman notice and the legend of the veil, the details of her life remain obscure, and the historian must distinguish the liturgical commemoration of a Roman holy woman from the unprovable family identifications and miracle stories that gathered around her in the Middle Ages.
