Biography

Short Description

Abba Poemen, whose Greek name means shepherd, was an Egyptian monk of the late fourth and early fifth centuries and among the most important of the Desert Fathers. He spent much of his monastic life in the desert of Scetis, known today as Wadi El Natrun, and after that settlement was destroyed he lived at Terenuthis in the Nile Delta. He is the speaker or subject of a larger share of the Apophthegmata Patrum, the Sayings of the Desert Fathers, than any other single elder; later compilers in Greek, Coptic, Syriac, Latin, and other languages transmitted hundreds of short narratives and aphorisms under his name. He is commemorated as a saint on 27 August in the calendars of the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church, and he is likewise honored in the Oriental Orthodox tradition. He was not a bishop, patriarch, or pope; his standing was that of an abba, an elder whose authority rested on experience, discretion, and the recognition of other monks.

Reliable contemporary documentation of his birth, family origin, and death is lacking. Later tradition often assigns him a lifespan running from about the middle of the fourth century until about 450, but these figures are conventional rather than independently attested. The sayings indicate that he had several brothers who were also monks, including Anoub and Paesius, and that they formed a small community at Scetis. Stories preserved in the Apophthegmata describe their mother attempting to visit them and being refused, an episode used to illustrate the severity of early monastic renunciation. In 407 Scetis suffered a well-attested raid by Mazices (Berber) tribes. Poemen and his brothers escaped and, after a period of displacement, settled in an abandoned pagan temple at Terenuthis. There the eldest brother is said to have proposed a rule of life, and the group accepted Poemen's spiritual direction. He is portrayed as remaining reluctant to speak for a time after the disaster, then resuming the reception of visitors who sought a word of salvation.

The portrait that emerges from the sayings is of a teacher who prized humility, mercy, and the refusal to judge others above extreme bodily asceticism. Poemen is shown correcting monks who wished to cut off a sinful brother, reminding them of their own faults, and preferring to bear with weakness rather than to impose harsh penalties. He stressed inner work—watchfulness, the cutting off of self-will, and throwing oneself before God—rather than the public measurement of progress. He advised that a man who teaches what he does not practice is like a spring that waters others while remaining unclean itself. Because the collection associated with him is so large, it is likely that some sayings of other anonymous or lesser-known elders were gathered under the prestigious name of Poemen by later redactors; even so, a coherent spiritual profile remains, and it shaped Eastern monastic spirituality for centuries. Writers such as the compilers of the systematic Apophthegmata and later monastic legislators looked to him as a model of the discerning elder.

Poemen does not appear to have been ordained. No source of independent historical weight records a wife or children, and his life as presented in the desert literature is that of a celibate monk from the time he and his brothers took to the desert. The place of his burial is not known. He was venerated by liturgical commemoration long before the later medieval processes of papal canonization and beatification, so no individual pope or patriarch can be named as having formally raised him to the altars. He is not associated in the major martyrologies with a specific patronage of places, trades, or illnesses. His enduring importance is literary and spiritual: through the Sayings he became, for later generations of monks in Egypt, Palestine, Syria, Constantinople, and the Latin West, the typical voice of the Egyptian desert.
