Biography

Short Description

Saint Pollio (Latin Pollio; also rendered Pollione) is remembered as a Christian lector of the church of Cibalae in the Roman province of Pannonia Secunda, on the lower Danube. Cibalae, identified with present-day Vinkovci in eastern Croatia, was a municipium on the road between Sirmium and Mursa. Nothing reliable is known of his birth, family, or early life; he enters the record only through the traditions of his death in the Great Persecution under Diocletian. In the early fourth-century church a lector was an ordained reader of the scriptures, a clerical office below the diaconate and priesthood. Whether Pollio was married, as some lectors of that period legally could be, is unrecorded.

The principal narrative source is the Latin Passio Sancti Pollionis, a late-antique hagiographical text related in cast and personnel to other Pannonian martyr acts, notably those of Irenaeus of Sirmium. According to this account, Pollio was arrested after the martyrdom of Eusebius, described as bishop of Cibalae, and was examined by a governor named Probus, the same antagonist who appears in neighbouring passions. Pressed to sacrifice to the gods of the empire, he refused and made a profession of Christian faith. He was condemned to death by fire and burned at Cibalae. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 28 April. The year of death is conventionally given as 304, at the height of the Diocletianic measures against the clergy in the Danubian provinces; the passio itself does not supply a consular date, so the year remains a reasoned inference from the persecution’s chronology rather than a documentary certainty.

Veneration of Pollio is already reflected in the Martyrologium Hieronymianum, which records a Pollio at Cibalae and thereby shows that a local cult existed by about the fifth century. Later Latin martyrologies, including Bede’s and the medieval Roman Martyrology, preserved the notice. He was never the object of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or modern type; his status as a saint rests on ancient cult and martyrological reception. Later tradition speaks of a translation of relics to Italy and of churches dedicated to San Pollione in parts of central Italy, but the documentary trail of any particular translation is incomplete and should be treated with caution. No contemporary inscription or administrative record naming him has been securely identified.

Historians therefore accept as plausible the outline of a lector martyred at Cibalae during the Diocletianic persecution, a pattern consistent with better-documented clerical victims in Pannonia, while treating the dialogue and miraculous colouring of the passio as literary rather than stenographic. Pollio is not known to have been a bishop, a monk of a later religious order, a pope, or a patriarch. Specific patronages of places, trades, or causes are not securely attested in the early sources. His historical footprint remains that of an otherwise obscure Pannonian cleric whose memory was kept by the martyrological tradition of the Latin Church.
