Biography

Short Description

Pope Anicetus was Bishop of Rome in the mid-second century and is counted as the eleventh pope in the traditional succession from Saint Peter. Ancient writers do not preserve a year of birth. The Liber Pontificalis, a later compilation of papal notices, states that he was a Syrian from Emesa (modern Homs). Contemporary second-century sources do not confirm that origin, but it became the standard medieval and modern identification. Chronologies of his episcopate differ among catalogues; he is commonly placed from about the mid-150s until the later 160s. No surviving document fixes either the beginning or the end of his tenure to a single verified year.

The most securely attested episode of his time in office is the visit of Polycarp of Smyrna to Rome. Irenaeus of Lyons, who had known Polycarp in Asia Minor, later recounted the meeting in a letter to Pope Victor I, a text excerpted by Eusebius of Caesarea. Polycarp and Anicetus discussed the dating of Easter. The churches of Asia observed the feast on the fourteenth of Nisan (the Quartodeciman practice), while the Roman church celebrated the Resurrection on Sunday. They did not persuade one another, yet they remained in communion. Irenaeus reports that Anicetus yielded the celebration of the Eucharist in his own church to Polycarp as a mark of honor. The story was later cited to show that liturgical disagreement need not break fellowship.

Anicetus’s pontificate coincided with the activity in Rome of Marcion and of various Gnostic teachers. Later tradition associated him with resistance to heresy, though detailed contemporary acts do not survive. The Jewish-Christian writer Hegesippus visited Rome while Anicetus was bishop and compiled episcopal succession lists in order to demonstrate a public apostolic tradition against Gnostic claims of secret teaching. Eusebius used such earlier materials in the fourth century. Martyrologies and the Liber Pontificalis present Anicetus as a martyr, but no second-century source confirms a violent death, and historians treat martyrdom as unproven.

The Liber Pontificalis says he was buried in the Cemetery of Callistus on the Via Appia, a notice that raises chronological difficulties because that cemetery’s papal crypt is associated with a later period; some scholars therefore prefer a burial in the Vatican area. The place of burial cannot be verified with certainty. Saint Anicetus is listed in the Roman Martyrology on 17 April. He belongs to the ancient, pre-congregational veneration of the early bishops of Rome. Apart from the Polycarp episode, the Hegesippus visit, and the general setting of second-century Roman Christianity, almost nothing can be verified about his family, personal life, or detailed administration.
