Biography

Short Description

Pope Boniface IV was Bishop of Rome from 608 until his death in 615. He was born in Valeria, in the country of the Marsi in central Italy, the son of a physician named John. Almost nothing is recorded of his childhood or education. He entered the Roman clergy and became a disciple of Pope Gregory I, who ordained him deacon. Medieval sources present him as a man of austere piety who followed a monastic way of life; he later converted his own house into a monastery. Later tradition identifies him as a Benedictine, though contemporary evidence speaks more generally of his monastic observance rather than of a formally attested profession in that order.

After the death of Pope Boniface III in November 607 the Roman see remained vacant for nearly nine months. Boniface was elected and consecrated on 25 August 608. His pontificate unfolded under the distant authority of the Byzantine emperor and amid the political fragmentation of Italy after the Gothic Wars and the Lombard settlement. The act for which he is best remembered is the conversion of the Pantheon. Emperor Phocas granted the ancient temple, originally dedicated to all the gods, to the Roman Church. Boniface consecrated it as a Christian church in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary and all the martyrs, an event usually dated to 13 May 609. Large numbers of relics of martyrs were transferred from the catacombs to the new church, which became known as Santa Maria ad Martyres. The rededication of so prominent a pagan monument was a striking symbol of the Christianization of Rome’s monumental landscape.

In 610 Boniface convened a synod at Rome. The assembly treated questions of monastic discipline and other points of ecclesiastical order. Mellitus, one of the missionaries sent to England by Gregory the Great and later bishop of London, was present and afterwards communicated the synod’s decisions to the English Church. This episode, recorded by Bede, shows that Boniface continued Gregory’s pastoral concern for the newly converted English. Few other letters or legislative acts from the pontificate survive in any detail, and the historical record of his administration remains comparatively thin.

Boniface IV died in Rome on 8 May 615 and was buried in St. Peter’s Basilica. He was succeeded by Adeodatus I. From an early period he was venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church; his feast is observed on 8 May. The church he established in the Pantheon still stands as the most visible legacy of his brief reign and as a landmark in the religious history of the city of Rome.
