Biography

Short Description

Pope Caius, also known as Gaius, served as Bishop of Rome in the late third century. The Liberian Catalogue, a mid-fourth-century list of Roman bishops, records that he succeeded Pope Eutychian and held the see from 17 December 283 until 22 April 296, after which Pope Marcellinus followed him. Contemporary writers are silent about him; Eusebius of Caesarea does not mention his name. Almost every later biographical detail therefore depends on the Liber Pontificalis, whose third-century papal lives mix sparse notices with legendary and anachronistic material and must be used with caution.

The Liber Pontificalis describes Caius as a native of Dalmatia and a kinsman of Emperor Diocletian. No independent evidence supports either statement, and modern historians generally dismiss the alleged imperial relationship as unhistorical. His date and place of birth remain unknown. His pontificate fell in a comparatively quiet interval for Christians in Rome, after the persecutions of Decius and Valerian and well before the edicts of 303 that opened the Great Persecution under Diocletian and Galerius. Later tradition credited him with requiring that a man pass through the grades of ostiarius, lector, exorcist, acolyte, subdeacon, deacon, and priest before episcopal consecration, and with assigning the ecclesiastical regions of Rome to deacons. Both notices are typical of the Liber Pontificalis and lack third-century corroboration.

Caius died on 22 April 296, almost certainly of natural causes, seven years before the Diocletianic persecution began. He was buried in the Catacomb of Callixtus on the Via Appia. In the 1850s Giovanni Battista de Rossi identified a cubiculum there whose fragmentary inscriptions naming CAIVS and using papal titulature are widely accepted as marking the pope’s tomb. Some later martyrologies listed him as a martyr, but no early source records an execution, and modern hagiography does not count him as a martyr. Veneration of Caius as a saint is ancient and belongs to the pre-congregational cult of the Roman bishops. The Catholic Church keeps his feast on 22 April. No historically secure patronages of places, professions, or causes are attached to his name.
