Biography

Short Description

Pope Deusdedit, known in later lists as Adeodatus I, was Bishop of Rome from October 615 until his death in November 618. He was a native of Rome and the son of a subdeacon named Stephen, according to the Liber Pontificalis, the principal early source for his life. No reliable chronicle or inscription records the year of his birth, and almost nothing can be verified about his career before the papacy. He was elected after the death of Pope Boniface IV, during a period when Rome still belonged to the Byzantine Empire’s Italian territories while much of the peninsula was under Lombard rule. His name, Deusdedit (later rendered Adeodatus), means “given by God.”

The surviving notice of his pontificate is brief. Rome suffered a severe earthquake that damaged many buildings, followed by an epidemic described as a contagious skin disease or scabies. Deusdedit is remembered for pastoral care of the clergy and of those struck by the outbreak. He is noted as having been a priest, rather than a deacon, at the time of his election, and he ordained fourteen priests. Later tradition also attributes to him the first regular use of a leaden bulla, or seal, on papal documents, the practice from which the term “papal bull” derives. No letters from his reign are known to survive, and administrative details beyond these points are not securely attested.

Deusdedit died in Rome on 8 November 618 and was buried in the old basilica of St. Peter. A vacancy of many months followed before the election of Boniface V. He has been venerated as a saint in the Latin Church from the early Middle Ages; his feast is kept on 8 November. Because he lived long before the later medieval processes of canonization and beatification, no individual pope is recorded as having formally canonized or beatified him. He is entered in the Roman Martyrology, but he is not associated in reliable sources with specific patronages of places, professions, illnesses, or groups.

Historical reconstruction of his life therefore rests almost entirely on the short Liber Pontificalis entry, liturgical calendars, and the general political and ecclesiastical setting of early seventh-century Italy under Heraclius and the Lombards. Later medieval writers add little of independent value. The scarcity of contemporary documents means that many aspects of his character, policies, and private life remain unknown, and cautious accounts must distinguish the few attested facts from later hagiographical expansion.
