Biography

Short Description

Pope Telesphorus was bishop of Rome in the first half of the second century and is traditionally counted as the eighth pope, succeeding Hyginus. The earliest and most important testimony concerning him comes from Irenaeus of Lyons, writing around the 180s, who lists Telesphorus in the Roman episcopal succession after Linus, Anacletus, Clement, Evaristus, Alexander, and Sixtus, and who states that Telesphorus was gloriously martyred. Irenaeus's notice is unique among his remarks on the second-century bishops of Rome in explicitly recording a martyrdom, and it was written within living memory of the events. Eusebius of Caesarea, drawing on earlier chronological traditions, assigned Telesphorus an episcopate of eleven years in the reign of Hadrian.

Exact years cannot be established with certainty. Conventional reconstructions, based on Eusebius and later Roman lists, place his pontificate in the approximate range of the mid-120s to the mid-130s, often given as about 125 or 126 until 136 or 137. The Liber Pontificalis, a much later compilation whose early papal biographies mix tradition with legend, describes Telesphorus as a Greek by birth and asserts that he had lived as an anchorite before his election. Some medieval recensions associate him with Terranova in Calabria, a claim that cannot be verified from contemporary evidence and may reflect the Greek-speaking character of parts of southern Italy rather than a documented birthplace.

The same Liber Pontificalis credits Telesphorus with several liturgical regulations: that the Nativity of Christ should be celebrated with Mass at night, that the hymn Gloria in excelsis Deo should be sung at that Mass, that a fast of seven weeks should be observed before Easter, and related Lenten practices. Historians generally regard these attributions as anachronistic. Christmas as a distinct feast, the Gloria, and a forty-day or seven-week Lent are attested only later; the Liber Pontificalis frequently ascribes later Roman customs to early popes in order to give them apostolic or sub-apostolic authority. No second-century source confirms these decrees.

Telesphorus is venerated as a saint and martyr in the Catholic Church and in the Eastern Orthodox Church. Tradition holds that he was buried near Saint Peter on the Vatican Hill. His principal Western feast day has long been 5 January; Eastern calendars commemorate him on 22 February. Beyond Irenaeus's brief statement of his martyrdom, the place of his death is presumed to be Rome, but the circumstances, the identity of any persecutor, and almost all details of his life remain unknown. He belongs to the obscure but historically attested series of second-century Roman bishops whose names and order Irenaeus preserved in order to demonstrate the public succession of the Roman church.
