Biography

Short Description

Saint Praetextatus (also spelled Pretextatus) was bishop of Rouen in Merovingian Gaul in the sixth century and is commemorated as a martyr. Nothing reliable is known of his birth, parentage, or early career; the surviving record begins with his occupancy of the see of Rouen, an important Neustrian bishopric, from about the middle of the century. The principal narrative source is the Historia Francorum of Gregory of Tours, a contemporary who knew him, attended the synod that condemned him, and later visited him as he lay dying.

In 576 Praetextatus officiated at the marriage of Merovech, son of King Chilperic I of Neustria, to Brunhilda, widow of Sigebert I of Austrasia. The match was politically explosive and canonically irregular, and it earned the lasting hostility of Chilperic and Queen Fredegund. Chilperic accused the bishop of conspiring with Merovech and of diverting royal treasure to the prince’s cause. In 577 a synod of bishops met in Paris under strong royal pressure. Gregory of Tours, who was present, records that he spoke in Praetextatus’s defence and that the proceedings were marked by intimidation. Praetextatus was condemned, deprived of his office, and sent into island exile.

After Chilperic’s assassination in 584, Praetextatus was restored to Rouen with the support of King Guntram and of the local clergy and people. Fredegund, now widowed and residing in the Rouen region, continued to regard him as an enemy. In 586, while he was in church, he was stabbed by an assassin widely believed to have been instigated by Fredegund. Gregory describes visiting the wounded bishop, who named those behind the attack and died of his injuries. Traditional dating places the martyrdom on 24 February 586.

The church of Rouen honoured him as a martyr-bishop. His name entered the Roman Martyrology, and his feast is kept on 24 February. Beyond Gregory’s testimony and the liturgical commemoration, few independent details of his life, family, or burial survive, and no substantial medieval miracle collection comparable to those of better-documented Gallic saints has been preserved. His biography remains inseparable from the violent court politics of the Merovingian kingdoms.
