Biography

Short Description

Saint Angelus, also called Angelus of Jerusalem or Angelus of Sicily, is a Carmelite priest and martyr venerated in the Catholic Church, above all by the Carmelite Order and in the Sicilian town of Licata. Traditional Carmelite hagiography places his birth in Jerusalem about 1185. According to that tradition his parents were Jews who converted to Christianity, and he is often said to have had a twin brother named John. After baptism the brothers are described as entering the community of hermits on Mount Carmel, the group from which the Carmelite Order developed in the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. These particulars come from later medieval lives rather than from contemporary documents. Historians therefore treat the early biography as largely legendary, while accepting that a Carmelite named Angelus became the focus of a cult in Sicily.

Ordained a priest, Angelus is portrayed in the sources as a preacher of notable zeal. Carmelite tradition holds that around 1218 he was among those sent from the Holy Land to the West as the order began to establish houses in Europe. He is said to have worked in Sicily, preaching against heresy and public vice. The same accounts name a local notable—often called Berenger or a similar form—who maintained an incestuous union. Angelus publicly rebuked him. In retaliation, according to the legend, that man arranged the priest’s murder.

He was killed at Licata on 5 May 1220. The martyrdom narratives describe a violent assault, commonly a sword blow, sometimes accompanied by later miraculous embroideries such as unusual signs at the wound or the conversion of the assassin. His body was buried at Licata and became the centre of a local cult. A church and later a sanctuary dedicated to Sant’Angelo housed his relics, and he was adopted as principal patron of Licata. The Carmelites entered his name in their liturgical calendar on 5 May. He has long been honoured as a saint, although a formal papal canonization of the later juridical type is not clearly recorded in the same manner as for many post-Tridentine saints.

Because the principal vitae were written generations after the events they describe, and because they follow familiar hagiographical patterns (Jewish convert, twin brother, mission from Carmel, death for denouncing sexual sin), modern historians are cautious about reconstructing a detailed biography. What can be said with more confidence is that by the later Middle Ages Licata and the Carmelite Order venerated Angelus as a priest-martyr of the early thirteenth century, that his feast remained 5 May, and that his patronage of Licata has been continuous. He is not recorded as having been married, as having had children, or as having held the offices of pope or patriarch.
