Biography

Short Description

Priest Anthimus is commemorated in the Latin church as a priest of Rome who suffered martyrdom during the Great Persecution under the Emperor Diocletian in the early fourth century. No contemporary acts, inscription, or other document that can be securely dated to his own lifetime has survived, and his year of birth, place of birth, and family are unknown. The principal witness to his existence is a short notice in the Roman Martyrology, which locates him at Rome and remembers him as a priest already distinguished by virtue and by preaching before his arrest. He is not to be confused with the better-documented Bishop Anthimus of Nicomedia, nor with later patriarchs and metropolitans who bore the same name.

The traditional passion, as summarized in that martyrology, states that in the persecution of Diocletian he was thrown into the Tiber. An angel is said to have drawn him from the river and restored him to his oratory. Recaptured afterwards, he was beheaded and so received the palm of martyrdom. This sequence—attempted drowning in the Tiber, miraculous deliverance, recapture, and decapitation—belongs to hagiographical narrative of a kind common in Roman commemorations of the Diocletianic martyrs. It should be read as the church’s remembered story of a local priest-martyr rather than as a chain of events confirmed by independent historical evidence.

The wider imperial setting is not in doubt. From 303, edicts ordered the destruction of churches, the burning of sacred books, and the coercion of Christian clergy and officials; further measures pressed Christians to sacrifice to the gods. Rome, still a major Christian center, saw arrests of priests and deacons. A priest known for preaching would have been an obvious target. Later compilers often assign Anthimus’s death to 303, at the opening of the persecution, but the martyrology itself names no year, and a date within the broader span of the persecution is all that the sources strictly support.

His feast is kept on 11 May. The cult is of the ancient, pre-congregational type: he was honored as a martyr in the Roman calendar long before the later medieval and modern juridical processes of beatification and canonization, and no pope is recorded as having formally canonized him. No verified list of patronages is attached to his name, and no specific burial place—such as a named catacomb, cemetery, or basilica—can be established from reliable evidence. He remains one of the lesser-known priest-martyrs of Rome, whose memory is preserved almost entirely by the liturgical books rather than by a full biography.
